Frankly said, I don't give a crap about magic systems, if the story is good, the story is good. Period. |

I view it as setting the record straight on something blatantly untrue you said about the Realms, and its creator. Other than revealing I knew your first name, there was nothing "personal" about it.
Your first post was not a personal attack, but you did go back to the editor blame card. Considering that Ed keeps writing for these company, this seems wrong to me. I dislike blaming nameless, faceless people. A person, someone in charge, set the editorial standards that you describe. Not an anonymous 'they' or 'the editors.' Ed and the other writers keep writing so they agree to the policy, If the changes happened over and over again, well, you've heard the whole 'fool me once, fool me twice' saying, right?
I'm not saying this is something Ed should have quit over, just saying that since he keeps working for them, he accepts it. Just like his continuing to write for WotC now is tacit approval of the Spellplague and the rest of the 4e Realms. One is always repsonsible for who and what they choose to be associated with.
Andy Richter, Conan's sidekick, was once asked how he justified appearing in bad, unfunny sitcoms. I thought his answer was perfect. "I have kids. They eat." I find nothing wrong with Ed or any other FR writer acknowledging that they do not artistically approve of the direction WotC has taken the Realms, but they needed the money. I respect that. But they shouldn't also claim any sort of artitistic purity as if they are untouched by it.
Now, unlike Red Walker or Tasker, I don't feel you made unreasonable, blatent personal attacks, but your third post DID get personal. I've quoted the specific sections below. I felt you were just trying to protect your friend, Ed, which I can respect.

What that tells me is that you can't or are choosing not to understand the nature of work-for-hire publishing. I'll accept that from a young child, but not from someone your age, P. YOu know better, or should. <snip> Keep this up, and I'll have to blithely dismiss you. I expect better of a grognard. NOT happy lockstep agreement, but an ability to accept real-world conditions and history. There's something I find I have to repeat when training young, green editors: "Never mistake your personal preferences for what is 'right' or 'correct.'" You're neither young nor green, so repetition SHOULD be unnecessary.

*bangs head* The publisher has the final responsibility of what is printed, should you need a name to blame. Authors are under contract and it gets very hard to withdraw halfway though the process. An advance likely paid that needs to be refunded, if the publisher has already announced an upcoming novel there would be addition costs to the author. The cost of advertising and the unrealized revenue because an author name either being removed from the book or the book not published at all. Which likely adds legal fees to defend or at least reach a settlement.
Ed more then most are required, by long standing contract, to write for the current owner of FR. He does not have the right to withdraw his name from a book after it is published. He does not even have the right to sue the publisher for changing what he submitted.
Ed could hate the Spellplague, however he because of contract can not even say that. |
