| Finished a biography of the Clash and am working my way through Denise Mina's End of the Wasp Season until this month's Paizo-package arrives. |

Someone lock the thread, it's been going on for TWO years?!
I was already planning to seal it up on 31 December, and open a new scroll for 2013, so I'll leave it until then.
It will be a bit sad to see it go but it is kind of out of date now. |

Agreed. I love these kinds of discussions, because I'm always finding new books that I wasn't aware that I can eventually add to my stacks. |

I thought it was perfect. A fitting closure, with a few loose ends to allow for sequels... |

Sampled it. Unlikeable characters, long descriptions of unremarkable places, and droning narration of the plight of some stupid bunch of desert folk. Needless to say, I got bored, and gave it up upon reaching page 78. Maybe I'll pick it up again, maybe not. |

I have a standing rule for Mercedes Lackey fiction: avoid it like the plague, unless she's writing with Larry Dixon. Some of the concepts I've seen in her books have bugged the crap out of me, like a humanoid/snake race called Slavers (yes, with capitalization) or the way a moderately skilled Bard (again with the capitalization) would be more magically powerful than a highly skilled wizard.
I've got some older paperbacks that contain blurbs about her books, usually with the claim that she's one of the "hottest stars in fantasy!" or somesuch nonsense. I often wondered why, if she was such a big star, she always had a co-author -- and why the quality of the story seemed dependent on that co-author. |

So you are saying she's just someone's lackey?
I got A Mighty Fortress and a trilogy called Titus Crow for Christmas. I'm vaguely aware of the first one, but I can't remeber what I've heard about it. The second one - the series - I've never heard of. According to the back-cover blurbs its sounds very Cthulhuesque, which really isn't my cup of tea (although I do read all other genres... if they are excellent). Anyone have any input on these works? |

| Brian Lumley's Titus Crow stories do indeed derive from Lovecraft's Mythos, but I remember them as being more heroic and less horrific than the average Cthulhu Mythos story. I haven't read them in decades, though, so if I turn out to be misremembering them, sorry about that. |

I quite enjoyed some of her individual and co-authored works. This is the first one that almost bored me to death. Not even the fact that the main protagonist is a wizard saved me the boredom. |

A Mighty Fortress, from the Safehold series -- I've been enjoying that series, myself. I particularly like the way it borrows from Arthurian legend, and of course I like the political aspects, as well. |

I just finished Evermeet: Island of Elves a few hours ago. I really enjoyed the book and the look at the history of the Elven people. Though having read it I can now see why some dislike the Elves.
I'm not sure what I am going to read next. I'll probably either pick another Realms novel off my stack or try to chip away a little at War and Peace before I buy Scoundrels (the new Star Wars book by Timothy Zahn) that comes out in a couple of days. |

Agreed. I love these kinds of discussions, because I'm always finding new books that I wasn't aware that I can eventually add to my stacks.
I suggest the year (2011) be removed, and just seal it when it reaches 100, just like any other threads. |

Perhaps.
Though I'd rather just start the whole scroll fresh, I think, and prepare the platform for all kinds of new discussions.

Finished the last book of the Chronicles trilogy, Dragon of Spring Dawning. I think I'm done with DragonLance for awhile. I'll see the world of Krynn again in the F.R. crossovers(Lost Gods, Ravenloft and SpellJammer)and that might just be enough. Next year I will start book 1 of The Harpers The Parched Sea. |
