I read that one a few months ago. Great book! Probably my favourite so far. I'll be jumping into House Of Chains after I finish the Shannara Trilogy.
I am going to take a break from the Malazan series for a month or two before diving into House of Chains |

It really is good to take breaks between books in that series. I very rarely do this, but you just have to with Malazan. |

Agreed. I read the first 3 books of the series back to back to back and it was just too much. I had to pause halfway through the third book and read a few Conan books to clear my mind. The end of Memories of Ice was absolutely fantastic and I probably would have enjoyed it even more if I had had taken a break after Deadhouse Gates |

I just finished Magician, by Feist. Wonderful book. Ordered Silverthorn and Darkness at Sethanon as soon as i have turned the last page. Were on vacation in Greece the past 2 weeks and i stumbled over 2 of his other books by mere happenstance, Talon of the Silver Hawk and King of Foxes. Albeit later in the series, i took a chance and read them and they proved very good. Great reading! Guess i gottta go back and read everything now
By the way, any of you well read people know in what series Kylar Stern features?

There's a lot of those books to go thru!
I'm almost done with the Empire trilogy, myself, which is set entirely on Kelewan. |

I read most the books with a year pause, as they were released, there's a lot of similar names, I forgot what some of them did in the previous books. I wish it was all at once. The next book, House of Chains, starts differently, with Malazan's Conan, and has a more coherent plot.

Oh, I love the trilogy, myself. I discovered the first book, by accident, right when it came out, and I read the other books as they were released. This is my first time re-reading the books in several years, myself.
The magic and warfare common to the other books isn't as prevalent in the Empire trilogy; its more about the political maneuvers performed by an untested girl thrust into Tsurani politics, and how she deals with increasingly powerful foes -- including the Assembly, in the third book.
The trilogy also includes something I enjoy in books: seeing a scene from a different angle. Mara and her retinue were at the Imperial Games when Milamber got tweaked off...
The trilogy showcases Tsurani politics, and you also get to see it changing. And there are some familiar faces, too: Milamber puts in a couple of appearances outside of his destruction of the games, Emperor Ichindar is in there, Hokanu becomes a major character, and we see more of Hochopepa, Shimone, and Fumita. |

I loved the Night Angel Trilogy and highly recommend it if you enjoy reading about assassins and their training. The author does a great job at character development and storytelling but is a little weak on the world-building.
*are there copyright issues with using another author's character in your work?? (unless of course Paul had legal permission to do so) |

Glad to hear another Feist convert.
I love his novels. I would recommend you read them in publication order, though chronological order isn't bad either.

Despite the weak world-building, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Great characters and interesting plot with several twists. If you're a fan of assassins, wizards, thieves, and everything in between, then you'll like it too.

We're on the same boat... I'm a bit hesitant to read the series primarily because most of the characters I've grown to like are not there. I've enjoyed some of Wurts's books, though, and probably would give Empire a try. At least the first book. I'm also intrigued by how exactly did Mara change politics in Kelewan---something which has been mentioned a couple of times in Feist's non-Empire books. |

| Starting with the first volume of the Satsuma Gishiden manga series. I've been told by a friend that it is a wonderful source for plot-ideas to base samurai-like campaigns around. And since I'm starting with a new Lot5R campaign next weekend, I thought I'd give some of the volumes a read-thru. |

I'm 150 pages into the first book now and it's a very smooth read.
The entire Myst franchise has been a long-cherished part of my life -- with both the games and extensive fiction/lore for the "worlds/Ages" being so well-written and developed, as to be among the most fleshed out of settings that I've ever encountered.
I usually re-read the original three Myst books every so often. I love "The Book of Atrus." And the subsequent tale, "The Book of T'iana," includes a lot of fascinating lore of the people of D'ni and their culture. But I think the highlight of the trilogy, is definitely the "The Book of D'ni." It always sets my armchair-interest in archaeology on fire! |

Am currently reading Lincoln by Gore Vidal.
I'm about 114 pages in (of 660 or so...this is the kind of book that you can use to prop a door open on a windy day) and I've found several good quotes that I can use in my Realms game/fan fiction set in Cormyr. Lots of elder statesmen characters in this book who aren't afraid to render their opinions about the world (and each other). |

That story and weeks' stuff from the beginning brackets of the cage match made me check out the night angel trilogy. I had a few gripes which I mentioned a couple pages back in this thread, but overall I really enjoyed it (particularly the first book).
Apparently it's been a while since I ordered anything on amazon, and my old address was saved on my account. So I fear my copy of Mr. Kemp's new book maybe have been sent there. I'm glad I'm still on good terms with my old housemates...unlike our other former housemate. Cos I think his w2's went into the fire place. Unless the us postal services change of address forwards whatever shipping category that shipped under, in that case i guess I'd just be waiting for it to be re-routed. Doh. |

John Carter of Mars novels. Saw the movie and thought the books could not be that bad! Luckily I was right I'm not the sixth of eleven novels and glad I decided to try them.
Just when you read them it kind of gives you that feeling of its all been done before when comparing what came after! |

| I'm reading the newly revised version of Nightworld, F. Paul Wilson's finale to his Repairman Jack/Adversary series. Great stuff, although it would make a lot more sense to read the whole series from the start than to pick up this one cold. |

Looks like we're set to get an RPG [FINALLY!] based on the popular setting.

Finished Paul S. Kemp's "The Hammer and the Blade". Guys, get this book! 100% recommendable. Fantasy at its best and the main characters Egil and Nix are probably the best team in novel history. |

| Reading the second Myst book, the Book of Ti'ana. It is weird to say the least. I am 100 pages in and all it seems like is that the author is a geologist and decided to write a fiction story. So far it feels very different from the first book, which I actually enjoyed. |

The Book of Ti'ana is often regarded as the one book in the series that either has fans or detractors.
I myself liked it. But I know many readers who weren't really interested in the very detailed exposure of the internal dynamics of D'ni society that the book provided. That, and the fact that the novel largely takes place in the past of the events depicted in both The Book of Atrus and The Book of D'ni, usually makes some readers uncomfortable with the progress of the series. |

I thought Book of Ti'Anna was awesome. Possibly my favourite? I'm big on prequels for some reason. And I'm also big on stories describing the collapse of a society.
I can't say I was fond of the third book though. It felt like nothing happened in it. Kinda like a "Further adventures of..." book. I think I remember reading that it's the third book and not the second book that is generally the least favourite. And the second one is widely regarded as the best. I could be wrong though. |

I've progressed a little farther into the story now (page 218), and it is starting to pickup and looking to be a good book. I just thought it was strange that for literally the first 100 pages the author decided to incorporate every geological vocabulary word in his repetoire. |

I'm about halfway thru The Janus Affair, right now. It's an enjoyable steampunk tale, and is the second book of the Ministry of Peculiar Occurrences series. I quite enjoyed the first one, so I had to get the second one as soon as I saw it.
Prolly will read The Hammer and the Blade after that. |
