Overall, it's a fun little jaunt into the history of the Forerunners, the origins of the Halo constructs, and the general state of the galaxy before the epics tales of the Haloverse that we're all pretty much familiar with.

Without actually providing spoilers, I'll just say that it was enjoyable enough to make me want to read the next book.

Thanks for letting me know. I really enjoyed Ghosts of Onyk and will work my way up to this one soon as well.

Almost finished with A Darkness at Sethanon by Feist. It's pretty good and it has one of the best prologues I've ever read in a novel. Reading the prologue of a book is usually a hindrance to get out of the way before I can start the novel...but this prologue - titled 'Darkwind' - was so good I read twice!
On another battlefront. I got the X-wing series, set in the expanded Star Wars universe. The first book titled: Rogue Squadron - anyone read it, and is it any good? I'm not familiar with Stackpole's writing.

Game of Thrones: A Storm of Swords, and how did I not read these sooner? I'm utterly engrossed even though they're completely frustrating in the way Martin lets his characters get so close to something only to snatch it away from them. At this point I'm literally screaming for certain Characters to 'catch a break'.

I got a Kindle for Christmas and it's just the best thing ever for me. I can read for ages without getting eyestrain, I don't even need to wear my specs. I can even read whilst I'm working (Multitasking FTW) because I can have the screen on it's max setting and just lie it on the desk beside me, my reading speed is back to what it was.

Ah, A Darkness at Sethanon. A favorite of mine! I'm a huge fan of Feist, and I will always love the original Saga more than the rest (mainly because I've read them so many more times, and because of Jimmy).

Such screaming will continue throughout the series. I once saw a graphic that showed the over of one of the books, with the title changed to "Don't Get Attached". That one is most accurate!

I just finished the third book last night, and am taking a break to revisit Ford Prefect, Zaphod Beeblebrox, Arthur Dent, and all that zaniness.

I gave up urban fantasy since high school. I don't think I'd ever read any, even if it's penned by my favorite authors.

Terry Brooks' Word and Void series is really great so far, but that doesn't mean i am going to dive into other selections of Urban Fantasy. I prefer my fantasy to be lacking of any type of modern technology at all.

A semi-urban fantasy is fine with me... The story happens partly in the modern world, and partly in some alternate, or totally different, conjured world, like Lev Grossman's The Magician and Barbara Hambly's The Walls of Air.

Every beginning has an end.

It is and will always be one of my favorite books of all time. In fact, some of his later novels are 'patterned' after his very first trilogy.

Also, that book presents more questions than answer the existing ones in the previous two. So prepare yourself for some guessing game.

Stackpole's writing tends to be very specific to the genre, in most cases, and to the universe he's writing in.

I think it would be best for you to simply experience the first book for yourself, and then decide whether his style is something you can continue to enjoy as you read through the series.

I personally much preferred Aaron Allistons Wraith squadron to the Rogue squadron books so even if you don't like Stackpole don't give up on the series. They are also quite distinct from each other so you dont need to have read one to enjoy the other.

I liked the transition between Stackpole's books in the series, and those of the other contributing authors.

It's one of the few instances in the SWU were multiple authors working on the one book series, actually make it feel consistent.

I've read one of Stackpole's Star Wars books: I, Jedi. As I understand it, the main character is from the Rogue Squadron books. I really enjoyed I, Jedi; it's one of the few Star Wars books I've read (the others were all Timothy Zahn).

Thanks for all the input on the X-wing books. I'll give them a try and hopefully they strike home because I found the blurps of the novels pretty interesting.

I've seen very good reviews for I,Jedi, but I've also noticed that it's written in the 1st person. I have this weird peeve for books written in the 1st person - I can't seem to get into it as much as a normal 3rd person point of view narrative.
I loved the Thrawn Star Wars books by Zahn.

I was a little weary at first as well. But I made the attempt anyway, since the novel does reveal some very interesting insights into the processes and function of the Jedi Order.

From Star Wars, I only read Revan, and one book with jedi ghosts in a valley, long time ago. Plan to read Stover's books one day.

You won't be disappointed. Matt Stover pens some awesome SW fiction.

I'll make one specific recommendation with his books. Make sure you read his novelisation of Revenge of the Sith. It reads more like how the film should have been.

Just seeing Jeff's name attached to any book is enough to ensure my purchase. The fact that it's also STAR WARS, is an awesome plus!

It's not a novel about the Sith Lord Scourge of the Old Republic era, but, rather, a tale about the adventures of Jedi archivist Mander Zuma. The novel is set in 19 ABY.
