Just finished City of Splendors: Waterdeep, by Ed and Elaine. Loved it! Now I'm deep into Shadowbane, by ESdB. Not sure about this one yet. So far, I've got a near-fallen paladin I don't like too much, and a weird Shar-worshipping lady I think is just mentally "gone", and the young half-elven guard who may be turning paladin. So far, he's the only one I like. I was kind of intrigued by the tiefling guy, but he's already dead, and the halfling is kind of interesting. Not sure where this is going, though. Hoping the story at least stays interesting, cause I'm not liking many of the characters.

I'm taking a short break from the Realms to read SW: Darth Plagueis. I'm about halfway through it already. It's an interesting look at Palpatine's master and how under his watch the threads of the 1000 year long plan Darth Bane began start to come together as well as exploring his training of Palpatine and how he came to be what we see in the movies. There is a lot of name dropping from all across the Expanded Universe.

Did you read the short story about Plagueis's dying master in the latest issue of Star Wars Insider too? It helps set the scene for why Plagueis is so obsessed with the study of "death" and it's relationship with the Force.

I really only check that magazine if I see it on the shelf and something looks interesting. Thanks, I will have to check that one out. I assume the story takes place before Plagueis decides to promote himself to the top spot in Sith Inc?

Yes. It's told entirely from the point of view of Darth Tenebrous, just as he lay dying after Plagueis had struck him down.

I see. Well it sounds like I will have to look into that. Thanks.

It's a decent book so far. The cynical side of me wonders if the publication was timed for this month to tie into the 3D release of The Phantom Menace next month. I remember hearing about this book being written a year (or more) ago and it was listed for December of last year on Amazon for a long time.

The book was originally supposed to be released in October 2008. But in February 2007, as a result of conflicting release scheduling, Luceno's writing commitments, and modifications to Palpatine's backstory in the Expanded Universe at the time, the work was ultimately brought to a halt. Then in March of that year, Sue Rostoni confirmed that the book had been cancelled. At the start of July 2010, Sue posted online that the book had been brought back into the scheduled listing for early 2012.

I finished Darth Plagueis. I don't know if James Luceno has a knack for weaving the EU together to make sense of the prequels or if he just really knows his stuff, but I think Lucas should've asked him to help write the prequels. This book, Labyrinth of Eviland Dark Lord: The Rise of Darth Vader go a long way to clearing up questions about the prequels. To really get most of the events in this book someone needs to know quite a bit from the EU involving the events leading up to the Phantom Menace as well as other events that run through the entire series with a dose of Old Republic lore (like at least mentioning the names of the Sith Lords in KotoR 2, unlike Revan). But, if you know your EU, this book really tries to tie everything together.

I'm not sure what I will read next. Either a few more SW books I have, or more Realms books.

If you're looking for more SW Prequels EU novels to read, I'd recommend the novelisation of Revenge of the Sith by Matt Stover. It's an incredible adaptation of the film, and goes a long way toward re-stablishing some of the intimate connections in SW lore about the Chosen One, the Sith, and the fall of the Jedi. It certainly improves upon parts of the film that were handled poorly.

I've heard good things about that one but I do not have a copy at the moment. If I go with a SW book it will either be Crosscurrent (likely followed by Riptide) or Shadow Games. Or I might try to finish Planet of Twilight.

I was able to pick up the magazine you mentioned. I might pity Tenebrous if he weren't a Sith Lord.

Hmm. I was considering not picking it up, but I may look into it. Although I've still got a giant stack of other things actually in my possession that I want to read in the immediate future, and swtor has done horrible, horrible things to destroy my reading time. I am ashamed to admit I went from an average of 3 books a week to...well, since mid December I finished the Twilight War trilogy. I made it through half of Silver Shadows at work this week, but otherwise...pathetic. Eventually I will make it through all the Harpers stuff a friend lent me, probably read the non-fantasy stuff I got for Christmas, and then hit up Haunted Lands. But at this rate, that will take me the bulk of the year, assuming zomgICanHazNewVideoGame wears off to a degree relatively soon. As someone who's always read a lot, this is an incredibly disheartening 100th post. Heh.

Finished Pratchett's "Interesting Times". Started quite average and became really good in the end.

Finished reading Richard Baker's Swordmage, Book I of the Blades of the Moonsea trilogy. Great story and characters, and I am looking forward to finishing up the series.

*Also, this book is VERY light on the Spellplague side for those of you who do not enjoying reading 4E Realms novels.

Elric: In the Dream Realms from the Chronicles of the Last Emperor of Melnibone series. I've just finished The Fortress of the Pearl and am in the middle of the script for the comic, Elric: The Making of a Sorcerer.

I think Moorcock might be my favorite fantasy author. I like how his Elric novels are a great example of quality over quantity. :D

I'm reading A Storm of Swords right now... I actually had to run out this eve and get a second copy. My prior copy was laying on the floor, where I like to read. And this morn, one of the cats decided to throw up on it.

Needless to say, I was not amused.

Just started re-reading Pratchett's The Color of Magic. You never know how much you miss a writting style but after you start re-reading one of the author's books... Having such a pleasant time reading it again....

Finally got my copy of Sisterhood of Dune, so I'm setting aside most every other book I'm reading at the moment, to concentrate on this one.

I just finished Star Wars: Riptide after finishing SW: Crosscurrent a couple days ago. Both are by Paul S Kemp who shows, to me anyway, that he can do Star Wars as easily as the Realms. The two books featured some interesting tie ins to past events (like, Naga Sadow era past), current events (the presently ongoing Fate of the Jedi series, the back story anyway), and future events (not going to spoil that one). Riptide ended with some interesting possibilities for just about all the characters. The cast is an interesting mix with some parallels to A New Hope (that are actually pointed out by a character who would know) but not enough to feel anything like a rip off. I would love to see another book in this series (or a sequel to Deceived, or both).

I'll probably jump back into the Realms after this. I might finally start reading the Harpers series. A stand alone is probably a better idea though because I plan on trying to get The Masked Witchesas soon as I can and it comes out in 8 days. The Harpers may have to wait a couple weeks.

Peace is a lie, there is only passion. Through passion, I gain strength. Through strength, I gain power. Through power, I gain victory. Through victory, my chains are broken. The Force shall free me.

I'm a dog person, myself. I like the cats, but I still make a point of referring to them as my wife's cats.

The cat that did it, Furball (my name for her), used to be a stray before my then-girlfriend (now wife) and her mom took her in. Despite having been inside and fed regularly for 5 or 6 years now, she will still, on occasion, wolf down her food so fast she throws it back up.

She knows she won't get in trouble if she does it in the litter box, but she still only gets in there about 40% of the time.

The same cat learned in mere days that she needed to get out of the kitchen if I grabbed my squirt gun -- but in 5 or 6 years, she's not learned she can't bury her food on a tile floor!

And sometimes I think Furball thinks she's a dog. She drools, she follows us around the house, she'll happily roll over to get her belly scratched, and I've even got her trained to come when I snap my fingers (though that was kinda accidental -- I was just trying to get her to stop rubbing against the book I was holding if I was sitting on the floor, reading).

Anyway, after A Storm of Swords, I think I'll break for the Hitchhiker's trilogy. I've not read those since I picked up that omnibus in Dublin and read them on the flight home (incidentally, discovering that the American versions of a couple of the books are censored).

They are releasing Orb, Sceptre and Throne by Esselmont in a few days, continuing the events on Genabackis, probably it's better to read Stonewielder and Orb before Dust of Dreams (happens on Lether).

I re-read the Rise of Endymion by Simmons, for some Planescape inspiration. I don't usually re-read.

I'm currently on to the second book of the Mistborn trilogy by Brandon Sanderson. I really enjoyed "The Final Empire" - being ill yesterday, gave me lots of time to enjoy it.

Previously to that I read Patrick Rothfuss's "Name of the Wind" and "The Wise Man's Fear". Both were very enjoyable.

Ken: You from the States?
Jimmy: Yeah. But don't hold it against me.
Ken: I'll try not to... Just try not to say anything too loud or crass.

Name of the Wind and the Mistborn series are both on my near future "To Read" list

And mine too. I just picked up the boxed set of the "Mistborn" trilogy, and the recently released fourth book as well.

Well the first book had me laughing out loud at some points, because of the twists, and one of the main character's cleverness. I'd give it 9/10.

I also rank Mr Rothfuss's books pretty highly too.

Is the 4th book the one with railroads and guns in it? That sort of throws me off just a tad. I prefer my fantasy to be low-tech.
