Hi I'm looking for some more info on Dragons as PC's.
Which source books would be the best to use apart from the DMG and PHB for Half Dragon and Dragon Deciple (sp)
I play a mix of 1e 2e 3e and 3.5 I don't use 4e and don't want too, so please restrict any info to the relevant editions.
I have been using DragonLance but wish to cross over to Forgotten Realms with Dragon as a PC. (campaign reasons).
any help much appreciated.

| Agreed. That setting's entire purpose was to allow you to play as a bunch of dragons. I've never run it myself, but a couple of others in my gaming group had, and had a blast with it. |
Doggedly converting 3e back to what D&D should be...
Sigh... And now 4e as well. |

I'll echo that recommendation. 
I also thought it was a good resource for designing dragon NPCs, though I believe the 3E Draconomicon can do this, as well. |

Races of the Dragon (v3.5) is a great source if you want some nifty Draconic mechanics, it also describes the Dragonborn race.
Dragon Magic (v3.5) is also a good source and provides you with additional info and rules for Dragon Shamans (PH2) and a new class called the Dragon Fire Adept.
Unearthed Arcana (v3.5 and d20 SRD) introduces something called Bloodlines, of which you can choose to be a draconic bloodline. They work similar to Level Adjustment, though it's not all at once and you "give up" class levels (up to 3 for a Greater bloodline) at specific levels for greater power.

Just out of curiosity, which DRAGONLANCE sources have you been using? I might be able to recommend other books which can help. |

That's one of the few 3e sources I missed... simply because it had a very limited release here. But I'm wondering whether I should purchase it second hand.
What's the general consensus on this particular tome?

Pretty weak, honestly. It's all crunch, and not particularly good crunch at that. The PrC's are meh, the spells are ok, the Dragonfire Adept is a re-warmed warlock, and only one or two of the monsters are at all interesting. Races of the Dragon is a far superior tome.
That said, DM is one of the very few books that gave new warlock invocations, and several of them are quite good. So if you're playing a warlock, it's worth it for that reason. Especially if you can convince your DM to let you take the non-dragon-themed Dragonfire Adept invocations, a couple of them are great. |

I'd say that Dragon Magic has it's moments for re-flavoring your character. It brought in new sub-races of existing ones such as Silverbrow humans etc.
The Dragonfire Adept is far better than the warlock in many, many regards mechanically with invocations that are darn good (as Hoondatha stated).
What Races of the Dragon really have going for it is more PC variation and crunch. I know of quite a few feats from that book that are pretty impressive such as the Metabreath feats. |

| I like the book a great deal, though, Hoondatha is certainly right - it's very crunchy. I think that the flavor and invation of everything was such that if any individual concept had been placed in a different book, they would have been welcomed. |

TBH I have been using a homebrew, based loosely on the Silver in the Huma Legend. But I wanted to move to the Realms and start over and use official character stats before I start fiddling round with it again.
