Have not seen either of those, but from the sound of it, not a good fit. Yes, Frakes was Commander Ryker from TNG series. Not all THAT unknown, and he has also hosted "Fact or Fiction", and did voice acting in Disney's Gargoyles cartoon (as Xanatos), among other things. He's a big enough name to draw people in, but not so big that he'd turn anyone off with preconceived ideas of the actor rather than the character. |

I wouldn't mind famous. At. All.
Besides, it just boils down to one thing: how good and convincing the acting is. Appearance is one of the requisites; and acting is the primal one. Given that both actors (Depp and Frakes) act equally great, why not choose the more famous? |

Point taken, Alystra.
I'm still not so sure about Frakes, though... |

Well, I'm not saying he ever WILL be picked, but I could certainly see him in the role. Not just for looks, but as a fan of TNG, I'm familiar with his work, and he's actually pretty good. Then again, I'm sure there are many actors who could do a good job- it's just one of the names that really stands out for me- and I didn't even think of it, lol1 |

Woud it work out just fine if the actor to play Dr. Strange is black? They made Green Lanter white, so why not do the opposite in the Sorcerer Supreme's case? |

Errr... there have been several people to assume the role of Green Lantern. But the first was Hal Jordan. You're thinking of John Stewart, the third GL. |

And the most recent one, Ryan Reynolds. Why did they make GL white, anyway? Or was he originally white in the comics? I only watch the JL and JL Unli series, and GL has always been black there. |

Pretty sure Green Lantern started as a white guy.
But Nick Fury was originally a white guy, too, before they did the Ultimate version of him and patterned his appearance on Samuel L Jackson (this was even joked about in one of the comics, which made that actor's appearance in Iron Man even better). So far as I'm concerned, that worked out quite well.
So as long as Dr. Strange is some color appearing in nature, it's all the same to me. |

The original GL WAS white, as Sage mentioned. The black one came later, but has been around longer, at least in terms of how long he held the Name/power/whatever. Hal died, I think, and it was later passed on to Stewart, who lasted much longer as the GL. Ryan Rynolds is playing the FIRST GL in the movie, so it makes sense for them to use a white actor. As for Nick Fury... Well, it was already rumored that Jackson would play the role when the Ultimate version of him was first introduced, and the artists apparently liked the idea so much that they decided to go with it! In this case, casting him for the movies was just an extension of something that had already been talked about. He got it by default, basically.
Strange, on the other hand should NOT be black. Much like Kingpin shouldn't have been in Daredevil, though it was an interesting choice, in that case. |

I once watched a trailer of an animated GL movie. As far as I remember, he was white there. While in the animated series, he has always been black...
In GL's case, maybe it was just fine to have a black or white actor, as people might be a little bit used to it... In Dr. Strange's case, it might not work well. Why did I bring it up in the first place?! :D |

Well, to be fair, DC has had a habit of having multiple heroes using the same name- there were two Flashes and now there is a second Bat-Man, not to mention umpteen-million Super-Men, Robins, etc.... It get confusing. One of the reasons I prefer Marvel, actually. The name Wolverine has not been usedby five different heroes- although he DOES show up so often you'd think he could telport like Nightcrawler, LOL!!! I won't go into the "second" Captain America- Bucky is just keeping his place warm for Steve, IMO.... |

The first Green Lantern, Hal Jordan, was white. The Green Lantern you're referring to, was the GL during the time of the animated series you mention. Hal only returned to the role several years ago. Reynolds is playing the original and first GL.
I'll note further, too, that I'm discounting Alan Scott... who isn't actually a member of the Green Lantern Corps.

The only way this would work, is if the film follows recent New Avengers trends, and have Brother Voodoo became the Sorcerer Supreme, after Strange's fall from the role in "World War Hulk." |

If looks were the basis for the casts of a Dr. Strange movie, THIS FAN CASTING should be followed. |

No, Voodoo's still Sorcerer Supreme. |

Has BV gained enough popularity that Marvel is keeping him as the SS? Or is Strange going to return? Personally, though I haven't read the comics and therefore know almost nil about BV, I'd rather have Dr. Strange return. What's with the creepy looks of BV, anyway?! Art gone awry?! |

Quick question:
Did Dr. Strange appear and play a significant role in any of the X-Men NOVELS? |

Not that I know of. But I've only read two of them- One where they were mind-switched into other peoples' bodies (forgot the name), and the Star Trek cross-over called Planet X. He's been in many recent arcs of Spideay, Avengers, FF, and some others, though. Played a big part in the X-Men arc that brought Wanda back, too. |

Well, Voodoo gained his own ongoing series, only to have it cancelled after just five issues. He seems to have received the most play in Avengers-related titles.

Strange will return to the role eventually, as he's endured this kind of transition before.

It's likely the result of the new Sorcerer Supreme deriving much of his mystical and quasi-physical powers from the Loa, which are the spirit-gods of voodoo. |

I'd recommend picking up the black & white Essential Strange volumes, that reprint the good Doctor's adventures from the late 60's, right through to the 80's. Some of the best of Marvel "mystical" branch, I think. |

Thanks, I might give it a try. How about The Avengers? Was he more like a supporting/nearly insignificant character in that series? Did he appear in any Marvel-tie-in novels? |

I just thought perhaps it would have been great if Marvel introduced the Sorcerer Supreme in one of the X-Men movies; maybe in the coming X-Men: First Class. AFAICR, Dr. Strange appeared in the very first animated series, particularly in the Phoenix storyline. |

He's largely been a supporting character for the first story-arc of the new New Avengers series. But both he and Voddoo also played significant roles in the prior New Avengers series as well, when the issue of who would succeed Strange as Sorcerer Supreme, first arose. |

Yeah, very briefly, during a scene when Jean/Phoenix's power was growing more aggressive.
He played a much larger role in the first episode of the third season of the 1994 Spider-Man animated series. |
