During my travels through this place I have heard many rumours about a seemigly new type of Dungeons and Dragons game called Play by Email.
I have never heard of this before
Could someone please enlighten me as to what this is all about?

MuadDib, I have gathered quite a lot of resources on Play by Email gaming an have found it to be extremely interesting.
A close friend who has played PbEM-DnD and has suggested running through the very first adventure as one designed to be played around a board. I think after I have read through all of the piles of books I have collected I will be recruiting players for an adventure.
If you are interested, I have some ready made characters which I used when I DM'd the SWORD OF THE DALES trilogy. All you need to do is forward what Race and Class to me and I can reply with the character!

PbeMs aren't new, nor are they limited to Dungeons & Dragons. It's the carryover from plain play-by-mail games which were not unheard of -- especially between chess players. With the Internet, such things have picked up in both pace (far less turn-around delay) and frequency (less turn-around, less boring).
As well, in such places as Yahoo! Groups, you will find that people have created forums built around these games. This not only allows strangers to join, it means that since the players post to these groups (instead of directly to each other), people can follow along like spectators. In most cases, this lets the less experienced learn by example.
Alaundo is quite right, however; merely entering 'pbem' in the Search field will point you to the many scrolls where such an acronym has been penned. You will even find links to established games so you can take a closer look. |
Hell hath no fury like all of Candlekeep rising in defense of one of its own.
