So I'm looking for an item that a spellcaster can "write" spells into and erase them similar to a spell book but some other object like a gem. The first thing that came to mind was it like a Telkiira but then I realized the Telkirra comes with a bunch of other things.
Does such an item already exist in either realms sources or Core? I have yet to find one aside from a reference in Magic of Faerun page 172 that says magic can be used to disguise spell books as gaming boards, shields, and just about anything.

Look at . . . I think it's Complete Arcane? Maybe Complete Mage? There are rules there for alternate spellbooks and alternate magic items. It's been a long time since I looked it up.
Otherwise, yes, you should feel free to have a spellcaster who uses something other than a spellbook: a lore gem of his own making (basically a non-elven telkiira), tattoos all over the body, a notched walking staff, stone tablets, etc., etc. It makes very little mechanical difference to the game, so whatever you and your DM are cool with, go with that.

There is a type of gemstone that is exactly what you want, but I can't seem to locate the source (probably because I'm unsure of the name).
Chandolyn? Chardolyn?
Thought it had something to do with the Netherease, but I can't find it in the boxed set or LEoF under Dekanter (I thought that was where they were mined). Also looked at VGtATM, but without a proper name I can't search my PDF, and the appendix is useless.
Edit: Found a mention of them, anyway - pg. 98 of LEoF, right at the top near the beginning; they are called Chardalyn.

Edit4: The Glowstones mentioned in Dwarves Deep (pg.44) are probably a related mineral, or possibly just a Dwarven name for Chardalyn. AS a DM, I would just say that the Glowstones were 'Clear Chardalyn' with slightly different properties (and if the Netherease had discovered those, instead of the versions they found, they might not have needed to develop the Spellcrux ability of their Mythallars). Figure its like the difference between 'white diamonds', and 'black diamonds', gem-wise.  |

The Chardalyn were stones that stored magic, but not like a spellbook or kiira. A chardalyn absorbs a spell that is cast on it, and the spell is released when the fragile stone is broken. It can contain only one spell in this way, and other spells being cast on a "charged" chardalyn will work normally - maybe even destroying the stone and releasing the spell first stored.
The militia of one Netheril city or enclave (I think it's Karsus', but I'm not sure) use shields with chardalyns charged with the "fireball" spell in its outer center, and fire-resistance rings. So, when the enemies try to hit the soldiers and hit their shields, the stones can break and BOOM! |

The Tel'Kirra (or "High Lore Gem") appears much later in Lost Empires of Faerun, and therefore is the more advanced and in some cases unique version of the lesser Kirra (or "Lore Gem") which preceeded it in Magic of Faerun. The Kirra was also reproduced in the Magic Item Compendium under its common-tongue name of "Lore Gem". |
