What's the highest level possible for a creature in the Realms in different editions?

2 Edition: Depends on Race and Class.

3 Edition: ... No real limit. But rarely see past level 10 as players as is. Some epic levels are high. I know one of my friends has players that always seem to be level 40 and higher, but always seem to have problems with goblins or other low level threats.

4 edition: My info is limited. I belive level 30 is the max level, but I hear there was an expansion to increase said max level.

I love PMs! Please send me a message. Even if its Hi.

I think the highest level critter that I remember in the Realms was Bane. Maybe level 67 or some such? I can't recall right off the top of my head right now.

The Old Grey Box and AD&D for me!

You know, with the characteristics of the deities, I do not understand HOW some Elder Evils are capable of defeating them. I think these monsters are overestimated.

The highest level one that springs to mind is Daurgothoth "The Creeping Doom", a Black Great Wyrm Dracolich who was also a Wiz20/Acm5 with a CR50. Although apparently the Srinshee is as epic if not more so apparently according to the Annotated Elminster book, which I do not posses.

for 4e the current ceiling is level 30, but I've heard nothing of any plans to increase it. It does work a bit differently though, as in 4e lvl30 =/= 3e lvl30; e.g., greater gods in person are level 34-36 Solo's (a full blown battle unto themselves, unlike the 5-7 normal monsters that would usually make up a generic encounter).

One would hope that a greater god is much more than just "a full blown battle."

I think defeating demigod is already worth praise. And enmity of pantheon.

Yeah, a 'standard' level 30 party are going to have serious trouble surviving a punch up with Vecna or Tiamat without some sort of help or special circumstance. This is purely a stat discussion, mind; the chances of Tiamat just hanging around in a dungeon room unprepared and without an escort. The other assumption is that at level 30 a character is practically a cosmic force themselves.

It's the second assumption that I take issue with: a greater god should never have anything to fear from a mortal race, no matter how strong they are, unless they have the help of another greater god.

I can't remember exactly, but I'm pretty sure the 2e Faiths and Avatars set it out fairly nicely, including greater gods being so far beyond anything a PC could become it's not funny.

Also, defeating the avatar of the god will bring you nothing but many problems. Such rare opportunities as in ToT, A.K.A Time of wonders is unlikely. You cannot kill god until you will find him on his domain.

Indeed, indeed. I've yet to encounter anything, be it greater god or gormless goblin in all my days of DMing and PCing, just standing vacantly in an empty plane...

By the way... About Death Three... Did they had level as mortal beings reiterated to godship without changes? That makes them worthy of the title 'Strongest in the Universe'.

Probably not, for example look at Cyric, Midnight and Kelemvor.

The highest level of mortals so far is Ioulaum, CR 68
