All right, I don't have my rulebooks on hand since my move, but I do remember that a while ago when I looked into the matter in every source I had, I could not find a definitive answer to this question. Can anyone help with canon from rulebooks or novels or anything, really?
My idea is to have armor for a creature that is masquerading as an elf through the use of a polymorph or similar spell effect (not an innate ability). The armor must be wearable in elven form but must disappear in its much larger, natural form (dragon). He really wouldn't want to have to take the time to remove it for spontaneous transformation, and would rather not ruin armor every time he transforms, especially since he maintains an actual persona in elven form and is known to wear certain things. But it really would look stupid if it somehow stretched to fit his draconic form, to say nothing of how identifiable it would make him to those who otherwise wouldn't know he's also that elf they met.
Would the wild property allow him to wear armor in polymorphed form, and then cause him to "absorb" the armor in dragon form? Any other suggestions?

Hrm... I thought I had responded to this one earlier. Apologies for the delay on this; hopefully you haven't been waiting on pins and needles for this.
From the looks of things, what you want is an armor property that is almost the reverse of the wild property; it is absorbed into the wearer's natural form and separates when the creature changes shape. Statistically, I would make such a property identical to wild in terms of the numbers ("Moderate transmutation; CL 9th; Craft Magic Arms and Armor, baleful polymorph; Price +3 bonus." - DMG 219) but for purposes of balance I would make it a different property, since we're talking about a default non-humanoid form becoming a humanoid form as needed, and the Wild property is powerful enough as it is in accomplishing the reverse.
As for a name for the property... it's still relatively early where I am, and it's a weekend to boot, so I'm not fully awake yet. Let me know either way, if you come up with a name for the property or if you still need one; it's a property I'm planning to include in my games too. |
Playing in the Realms since the Old Grey Box (1987)... and *still* having fun with material published before 2008, despite the NDA'd lore.
If it's comparable in power with non-magical abilities, it's not magic. |
