quote: There have been several questions lately regarding the future of the Star Wars Miniatures and Roleplaying Game and until now I haven’t had definitive answers to give you. After a lengthy evaluation, Wizards of the Coast has decided not to renew the Star Wars license with Lucasfilm. We’ve had a long and fantastic run, but with the economic downturn, we have made the tough decision to discontinue our Star Wars lines.
Link to WoTC announcement
Well, this is a sad day. There's one last product to come out, The Unknown Regions, and then that's it. No more Saga Edition, which is pretty much my favourite RPG at the moment. On the bright side, it means I can complete the collection easily, as I've only got a few more products to buy. And then that's all the money WoTC will get from me, unfortunately. Sigh. Real shame this.

That's a blow for the fans. And particularly myself, since this has been almost a dream come true -- especially with the amount of lore and support the Saga Edition has seen over the last few years. Its been a thoroughly enjoyable ride.
I can't help but wonder though, whether WotC's decision might in some way be connected with the changes LucasFilm is incorporating into SW canon by way of the Mandalorians in the Clone Wars animated series. Perhaps there are greater changes coming that will make Wizards position on the RPG, somewhat untenable given what's already been published.

I was wondering when they would announce this.
Good thing I got Galaxy of Intrigue today. |

What's Galaxy of Intrigue like? It's not been released here yet, but from some of the reviews I've read online so far, several are claiming it's just not up to the standard of the previous SE tomes.

Heh.
To be fair though, the foundation for this retcon has been established for quite some time. A thorough reading of the entry for Mandalore in the Essential Atlas suggests possible hints about the change.

I don't know, Sage. Wouldn't changes to the source material ordinarily be considered a golden opportunity to peddle new supplements? Maybe even a whole new edition? |

I think it might have more to do with the cost of the license and the need of Lucasfilm to make sure anything new created by the game is passed through them first to see if it alters canon or adds to it and whether that's wanted.
I can think of only a few other intellectual properties that are less of a headache to work with. Add to that the relaunch of Gamma World, and WotC is probably hoping the Star Wars fans will transfer their dollars to GW. |

It's ok. It has the rules to run 'Skill Challenges' in Saga.
I bought it so, my collection would be complete so far. |

Ordinarily, I'd agree with you. But I think because this is a retcon that's been tackled outside WotC's full control, I suspect that this would make it difficult to reconcile with what they've already published about the Mandalorians in the past.
See, if this change were purely Wizards-based, then I'd have no doubt that they'd find some way to mould the future of the Saga Edition RPG that could make both the pre- and post-retcon Mandalorian changes somewhat applicable. But since Wizards must ultimately take their lead from what LucasFilm decree with respect to their IP, the hands of the Wizards are tied.
As I've said elsewhere though, I don't see this as the final end of the SW RPG. We've still got the live-action television show to come, and likely new seasons of the Clone Wars animated series. Thus, I wouldn't be surprised to see some incarnation of the RPG popping up again at some future point.
[Besides, even when the d20 SW RPG finished up, the Wizards site was still posting stats, adventures, and write-ups for game aspects via their RPG site. Heck, we had an entire freely available PDF statting the villains of Revenge of the Sith. So maybe this trend may still continue after the end of Saga Edition.] |

Here's to hope LucasFilm realizes that d20 is not the correct vehicle for SW and we'll see a return to d6 ... |
