As I work on my "A Detail of Tachepp" article, I'm wondering how other's would approach which type of subrace of elf dominates the population of the elves of the Border Forest in 1372 DR.

According to Serpent Kingdoms, page 186, the Rystall Wood was dominated by green elves while that realm stood. Then in Races of Faerun, page 27, "The decimated green elves never recovered [from the end of the Fourth Crown War{-10,000 DR}], fleeing into the deepest forests. Some, hiding even from their own kin, became the wild elves; others merged with like-minded sun or moon elf refugees to become a new subrace, the wood elves." Rystall Wood wasn't founded until -8,800 DR.

I really don't see the the Border Forest hosting wild elves with the fall of Rystall Wood being so recent (-64 DR). Would a civilized society fall so far so quickly? I don't know. Likewise, would the flight of the elves from the south due to the Twelve Nights of Fire (-5000 DR) and then later the Spiderfires (-2439 DR) spark enough of a culural change that they become a different subrace? Granted there were gold and silver elves present in the Rystall Wood prior to these events, but it seems like too short of a time for green to turn copper.

Any thoughts out there on how to approach this?

Woodwwad,

There are elves within the Border Forest given a couple of sources:

From the 'Settled Lands' booklet of Elminster's Ecologies, 'Part 2: Monsters' which says that Tachepp is elven village in Daggerdale that has a deep earthen trench around it containg ochre jellies for defensive purposes.

Then from Lords of Darkness (3 Ed) and Chapions of Ruin, it states that the Eldreth Veluuthra are present within the woods. One cell striking against Zhents and the other against Daggerdale.

So I have some canon reasons to believe that there is at least one elven settlement within the Border Forest. Granted that the Elminster's Ecologies entry states that there is an elven village "in" Daggerdale, I take a more liberal definition of "in" to include the southern edge of the Border Forest. Tachepp has never been included on any maps as far as I know.

I like what you've given me as far as what you've done in your campaign. I hope you don't mind if I steal some of it to add to my own articles. Thank you for your input Woodwwad.

So the question still remains: The elves that remain within the Border Forest; are they cooper, wild green, true green or something else all together?

Hmm, in the FR book the wood is largely dominated by what are described as wicked fey. Which is what I used there. There are also a lot of Zhent loggers. That has been a highly used setting in the FR game I'm currently running. The following is of course of my creation, that wood is ruled over by the chosen of Myrkul, A-Ya Doon, and his wife, who is a CE Nymph. They have the 10 tribes of Twilight, groups of fey that serve them. Dryads, nymphs, redcaps (the redcaps of my game are much different than the WOTC version who I don't care for, they stand about 5'10-6'6, all have red hair and pale white skin with vampiric teeth and are similar to vampires, if vampires weren't undead but instead fey---creatures of hunger, they are also called wolf faeries), and several more fey types I created. Anyway, that's just the flavor I put to it. But to answer your question, I don't think there are elves there in the canon; however, I could be wrong.

Woodwwad,

Thank you for giving the question on the elves some thought.

When I finish "A Detail of Tachepp", I'll post it here on these forums like my other details. To see my other articles, check the links on my signature.

check out my post, A brief summery of my FR game so far. There is a lot more about this stuff there that might be helpful. I do see your point there. If there are elves there, I would guess they are wild. If they are a settlement I would guess moon. And yes, please do feel free to use any of my inclosed info, if it fits in your article. A Detail of Tachepp article, where are you posting or publishing this? If there is anything else you'd like to know about my details of that area I'd be happy to explain. I have pictures for all my characters and lots of names, carefully done names in sylvan. I put many hours of work into that area of my game. A-Ya Doon's wife's name is Titiana Tianna Zuzana Doon (which in sylvan means her most beautiful queen of rose spring) she's a high level twilight weave sorcerer. I believe 13th level + nymph. In my campaign she's the most beautiful woman in the world and that was a quest A-Ya Doon had to find her and win her. There is some info on the tribes. A-Ya has a hidden demi-plane within the forrest. The plane draws from the positive plane, negative plane, and arcadia and was created by Myrkul for his choosen one. It is a place of utter beauty and romance. There are unearthly purple roses everywhere and it is always twilight. There is a huge seemingly never ending carrodor under a hill where the queen's pool resides. There are 11 portals to several places in the realms and the etherial and astral. The Princes of the 10 tribes of the Twilight (10 tribes of evil Faeries) Tribe of Gossamer (Sprites, and moth people, spiderpeople, faint ghostlike light creatures) Tribe of Evanescences (former followers of Shar----shadow tribe, cat people) Tribe of Ravenousness (wolf faeries, who have been bathed in the blood of Bhaal by A-Ya and become Redcaps) Tribe of Autumn Tribe of Guile (The people of secrets stolen from Shar, have been shadow magic for a long time, Fox People) Tribe of Laughter (Rabbit people) Tribe of Grace (Owl People) Tribe of Lust (Saytr) Tribe of Stillness (Dryads, rose tenders) Tribe of Elegance (Nymph) Javaze (slyvan for Prince) Javazi (slyvan for Princess)
