I know this is likely a question better asked at the WoTC boards as it isn't related to Forgotten Realms, but instead the 3.5 system. Frankly, I can't bring myself to visit the WoTC site anymore. So I ask it here, among the sages and keepers of the lore. =)
So the spell description for Charm Person states that a failed check results in the creature regarding the caster as a trusted friend and ally. The question is, what happens after the spell fades? Specifically the creature was indifferent at the beginning.
So does the creature know he was charmed? I know a being is aware when they must make a successful saving throw (PH pg 177, took me a while to find that text!!), that they've been attacked. Well how about those that failed, and the duration ends?
I'm split on what a character would or would not realize. Obviously a major factor is what occurred during the charm's affects. If the charmed creatures actions were uncharacteristic, they could realize that something was "amiss", but not immediately jump to "Damn I was charmed!!"
So how would a creature view their charmer, after the spell wore off?
"Hey that wierd old guy was pretty cool."
Or
"Why the hell did I think that old guy was cool?"
Now the scenario I'm facing is the PCs came across a "civilized" goblin. The goblin was indifferent to the PCs, as long as they didn't show themselves to be a threat to his tribe. One PC was paying the goblin in copper for information about the area, while the wizard cast a charm person on the goblin. The PCs got their information, and moved along. Now the goblin's behavior was a little more helpful than he would have been, but he was being paid...
I like to be consistent with my rulings, so while I know as the GM I can have whatever happen in this grey area, I do want it to be a precedent.

I've always played is so that if they failed the check, when the spell wears off, they simply remember the caster as a 'good guy' at the time. If they have ranks in Knowledge (Arcana) or Spellcraft, you could give them a roll to figure out they'd been charmed... |
I actually DO know everything. I just have a very poor index of my knowledge.

Generally, reactions don't wear off, but you can rule that it does after the original duration of the charm falls off, if you'd like. |

I'm a 2e player, nevertheless I feel I can add something here.
I believe the reactions of the charmed person may vary, once the spell runs out.
I believe a dice roll should be made if the charmed person has a low WISDOM score, to determine if they continue to act relatively favorable to the caster (but not under the same FULL effects of the charm spell), or if they re-assume their original demeanor to the caster.
And additional modifier should be for situation, such as if the goblin w/low wisdom was charmed by a human during a period when the two factions were at war, thus favoring the goblin w/low wisdom to fully revert back to his original demeanor towards the caster.
High wisdom should make for the victim to automatically revert back to his/her original position, after the charm spell fades.
Juss my 2 cents! |
