Just a quick survey to find out how many players in Candlekeep have had a character which has actually came face to face with either the Avatar of their god or the God themselves.

Although I usually try to refrain from using avatars or deities as major plot devices in my campaigns, when it comes to the planes, I just can't seem to say no.

The avatar of Bhaal, and the deity Deneir, are the only god-related entities I have used in my campaigns. My favorite PC (now an NPC), Rastromo Meradoc, the Sage of Perth is the only character of my creation to have met a deity (the afore mentioned Deneir).

I'll post more later.

I was in a party I was in a party that was caught in an almost fatal trip to the Plain of Elemental Ice. Only due to probably the most sincere and heart felt prayer I have ever heard From a Cleric. (Cough, Cough (D.I.) Cough) Illmater teleported us back to Faerun. It did cost us some pretty powerful magic items and we had to complete a quest. But, all and all it was a pretty cool meeting.

Wow! That has no saving throw written all over it.

I believe you actually meant the Paraelemental Plane of Ice.

Now, now, Sage, just because you love the Planes so much, it's no reason to quible over what to call them. Especially when the meanting is so clear.

Um . . . that's funny. I think I hear the kettle calling for a pot . . . .

It's now a moot point anyway. D&D 3e saw the eventual phasing out (from the D&D cosmology) of the para-, and quasi- elemental planes.

psst -- it's 'moot'

It's too bad, really. Would it have actually cost them anything to mention the stuff, even if they weren't going to do a Planescape setting? Were they so lazy that they figured they'd just cut the whole thing off?

Hmm. I might have answered my own question there.

Thanks Bookwyrm .

I don't know how I missed that, although I am extraordinarily tired, especially after spending the day debugging about 500 programs.

I really don't think that is an excuse though, not when it comes to Realmslore, or even Planescape....

Actually the 3e Manual of the Planes tome comes pretty close to setting up a legitimate 3e Planescape setting (even considering the changes to the cosmology, the modifications to the ethereal plane, and the promotion of the Plane of Shadow), although a lot of the fluff and flavor of my second favorite setting was ommitted.

Does the Lady count? No? Well, to the Mazes with you! Seriously though, I can yes, I have run accross avatars of Faerunian gods (and those of other pantheons), though not terribly often (otherwise it just gets boring). I personally shy away from throwing avatars around very often, if at all, however I have used a deity once or twice, they make nice, dramatic NPCs if used sparingly and appropriately (i.e. Tyr should not walk up and give the PCs a thumbs up on the street, although...).

I don't think the Lady of Pain would count, but then, it is very hard to define what she is exactly.... The theories that detail her nature stretch as far back as the creation of Sigil itself.

I did not really expect anyone to say she counted, I am just a shameless name dropper. Plus, I just like to point out one of my characters did not getting shreded to blades by being near her, so feather in my cap.

Hail and well met,
I had a character that rped during the Time of Troubles meet two deities, and get caught in a battle between them, it really wasn't a pretty thing either, it was a battle between Shar and Sune over the demi-goddess Sharess.

Never ever get between two deities even casted down ones.

I was cursed by Shar and blessed by Sune I was playing a Meistersinger (this was a 2nd edtion game of course) and it was a pretty interesting mess to be gotten into, on the night of the full moon my character turned into a unseelie nymph, this to spite Sune, so Sune "blessed" her with the abilities of a nymph all the time, how closed to blessed are you when you go to undress for bed and your mate goes blind..lol.

Either way it was a mess for that characters husband, I believe he was an NPC found in the Skullport book, Amryrr Yauntirr?

But that was as close to the deities as I want to get.

We need to be reminded sometimes that a sunrise lasts but a few minutes, but its beauty can burnin our hearts eternally."

Our high level party has met quite a few deities in their adventures. We all met our respective patron deities after succeeding in a fight against Gargauth although one person did die in that fight. We were all soon facing the gods who were personally thanking us, including Torm (my cleric's patron), Eilistraee and Lurue. Have also been to the realm of Tyr, Torm and Illmater on several occasions.

At least none have just shown up for a game of Monopoly at our keep.....

Evil will be dealt with swiftly as it is my duty to remove such evil from my presence.

Unless they were the epic-level PCs you mentioned elsewhere, that many deities would be highly excessive. Even then it's odd. No offence, of course.

Yep. Mentioned the party on another board.

THey met the various deities on various character levels from about 24 on up to their present levels ranging from about 31-36 now.

Before then, it was only visions and only a rare amount of those.

Evil will be dealt with swiftly as it is my duty to remove such evil from my presence.

A long time ago, we used to do an made up adventure called the Tavern at the Centre of the World. It was a tavern where all the gods could come and chill out. This was in the days of 1st Edition so we used their stats from Legends & Lore. The only problem with the tavern was that any god could choose to fight you in the pit that was in the centre of the tavern.

One of my friends characters picked a woman that he thought was the Ice Queen. Unfortunately she was the Maiden of Pain (can't remember her name now) and any damage that you dealt to her, you got returned upon you but double. He died pretty quickly.

We only used it for our high level adventurers. Now that I think of it though, the few challenges that we did throw down on gods, we always lost!

Personally in andventures we have never met any gods. High level NPC's yes but never a god as such.

Well I think it was in the Shadowdale module which took place during the Time of Troubles. Our characters breifly met two 'pre-dieties'...it was real brief and I (The DM too) was the only one who read the books. It wasn't until about 2 years later when two of the other Players read the books then asked me, "Say didn't we met that person?"
I am also proud to say I survived the 'For Duty and Deity' module, my boon that I asked from Waukeen was a map to the Valley of the Gods...that was an adventure within itself and a pleasent way to retire.

I hope Candlekeep continues to be the friendly forum of fellow Realms-lovers that it has always been, as we all go through this together. If you don’t want to move to the “new” Realms, that doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with either you or the “old” Realms. Goodness knows Candlekeep, and the hearts of its scribes, are both big enough to accommodate both. If we want them to be.
(Strikes dramatic pose, raises sword to gleam in the sunset, and hopes breeches won’t fall down.)
Enough for now. The Realms lives! I have spoken! Ale and light wines half price, served by a smiling Storm Silverhand fetchingly clad in thigh-high boots and naught else! Ahem . .
So saith Ed. <snip>
love to all,
THO
