...regarding the "Castles" issue (Dragon #295, May 2002), does anyone happen to know if there was a specific piece of software used for the castle maps in the cover article? I love the results, and have been searching fruitlessly for something that achieves something similar. Any help in tracking down this or similar software would be greatly appreciated.

Playing in the Realms since the Old Grey Box (1987)... and *still* having fun with material published before 2008, despite the NDA'd lore.

If it's comparable in power with non-magical abilities, it's not magic.

I don't believe there's software for it. I think it's following the digital-painting of maps in Photoshop. There are some nice tutorials out there on creating grid maps in Photoshop (or GIMP, the open-source Photoshop).

Here's a simple one: GIMP Dungeon tutorial

And, OH MY STARS AND GARTERS, I can't believe that I've never mentioned GIMP here before. It's free and offers almost identical functionality as Photoshop. It's not the same as PS (think the differences between IE4 and Firefox), but it's pretty good if you can't get a legal copy of Photoshop.

I actually DO know everything. I just have a very poor index of my knowledge.

-If it was 2002, it was likely Photoshop.

My answer wont be really an updated one but when I wanted to create dungeons maps, I used Power Point.
I found it reaaly useful and easy to use. Shapes, textures, structures copy-paste & rotate were enough tools to get quite good images... if you know what you want and if you're not in a urge !!

Heh... and then I completely forgot about this scroll for five months.

Ashe, Dagnirion, and Fillow, thanks for your input. Ashe, that GIMP tutorial looks great; I may have to check that out. The problem for me now is finding time to play with it. I need to rearrange two bookcases, two tables, and two desks to make room for a new 5.1 audio system (and reserve space for a future TV if I can find one I like on clearance, so that I can watch my movies without a magnifying glass; I hate trying to watch good movies on a 21" CRT ).
