Watching the classic movie Journey to the Center of the Earth last night got me thinking, what lies past the Underdark and as one moves toward the innermost reaches of the planet Toril? (Giant Hamster wheel? )
Lots of dirt, rock, and water of course, but what else? I gather that there would be numerous and huge portals or rifts to the elemental planes of Earth, Dust, and Mineral, plus the plane of Shadow. Naturally creatures of those planes would flit back and forth. Would there be any breathable air or bearable temperatures?
Is the core of Toril similar that of Earth, or something truly fantastic?
Of course, this has little bearing on my current game, but I wonder if anything was written about this in published works or here at the forums.

As I recall, the deeper one descends into the Underdark, the funkier and scarier it gets. |

From what I remember from the 3.5 Underdark supplement, the deepest parts of the underdark has many portals to the plane of elemental earth, and it is quite easy to cross over without realizing it. |

An interesting question Aysen.
You might want to ask Ed as well. I'd be curious to read what he'd have to say on this particular subject.

These portals mentioned above are not portals to the elemental plane of earth but to the shadow plane. Of course there are also numerous portals to all elemental planes and many outer planes, but the great danger are the many "holes" to the shadow plane which increase in number as one travels deeper and deeper into the Lowerdark. |

Or alternately, you could use a setting like the old D&D Hollow World...not canon, but more in line with what you were imagining... |

I remember reading *somewhere* that as you descend deeper into the underdark, more and more undead start to arise, namely due to the extreme temperatures( hot) air is virtually non-existent, and many undead make their rest down there( liches and the sort).
Also a way to avoid portals to other plains that come seamlessly would be Dimensional Anchor, cast it on your self, and walk/fly/fall/dive away( or so I interpret it). |

I had toyed with the very center of Toril transitioning to the Fugue Plane, changing some fundamental canon and adopting some of the Ghostwalk sourcebook material.
Then I thought... Cool World (1992, starring Kim Basinger, Brad Pitt, and Gabriel Byrne) or something equally freaky. Still not sure which way I'd go on that.

I know exactly what's at the center of my Toril... the can of worms that was opened by FR 4E. It is being crushed into an irrevocably sealed infinitesimal pocket dimension, containing the souls of those responsible for the $ellplague. Edit: And no, those souls do not include Ed's, no matter what you may have read or heard elsewhere. Ed had as much to do with the Spellplague actually occurring as anyone else who wrote products for the Realms before Third Edition. |
Playing in the Realms since the Old Grey Box (1987)... and *still* having fun with material published before 2008, despite the NDA'd lore.
If it's comparable in power with non-magical abilities, it's not magic. |

I picture the Underdark having its own Underdark, thats even scarier then the one we know of. I us the Underland from the wonderful Beyond Countless Doorways product.
Thats the Underdark's Underdark, and it connects to ALL orlds, not just the one your on.
Another idea (that came up over at WotC awhile back) is that Abeir is located in the hollow interior of Toril - I know thats not where its really supposed to be, but placing it there is an interesting concept, and you can just use the Hollow World products from the Mystara setting (and they already have a Maztica-like region!) |
