I play 3.X the most, simply because that's when I actually started buying the books myself, and thusly the one I'm most familiar with (unless my homebrew modified version counts). I've been playing in the realms for nearly 15 years, but only on and off until the release of third edition. I completely skipped second edition, and only after the fact have I acquired the old tomes that I currently possess.

You ask me what I crave above all things? Knowledge.

I clicked "3E" only because that's the version I'm playing in right now. It does not mean I think 3E "got it right" with the Realms, necessarily. I dislike the 4E version of the Realms, but I don't actually have a "favorite version".

I play exclusively 4E D&D, and the campaign I myself run is in the 4E Realms. As for actually reading novels and stories, collecting and reading gaming materials and so on, I don't have a favorite edition (though I'm most ignorant of 3.0/3.5--something I'm trying to remedy--grumpy UPS lady should be here with my Lost Empires of Faerūn any time now).

My Realms novel, Sandstorm, is now available for ordering.

I voted 2e (pre skills n powers) because that's the only edition I've run/played the realms in...the new campaign is due to start next week. It will be 3.5, but I'd gladly run 2e if given the chance...

2e. The thing I like the most about 2e FR is the feel of the world. The products released during this era, both in Dragon and stand alone, really set the feel for the Realms for me. The lore of 1e and 2e FR is unparalleled imo.

I am boycotting the 4e rules because of what they have done to the 4e Realms and I am quite happy with my oodles of 3.x books that I have. I really have no problem with the rules set of 4e though, and would play a game if someone else was DMing and I was not expected to invest money in the 4e PH.

Like Hawkins, I am boycotting 4E Realms. I love the 3.5 ruleset, and I am currently testing the Pathfinder beta. If our group changes rule sets at all, it will be to Pathfinder. Like Varl, I love the products and lore for 1e/2e Realms, and I really miss my library of such material right now; it's in storage about three hours away by highway, and I don't drive. Not to mention the fact that there's a *lot* of it. I have almost every product ever released for the 1E/2E/3E/3.5 Realms, as well as a hard-copy Dragon magazine collection from #52 to #359. No, I do not have a D&D Insider subscription, nor will I ever have one. I wasn't happy with the shrinking of the map that happened in 3E, and now I know why... the shrinking took away all the potentially unexplored areas, giving Wizbro a "reason" to blow it all up even though there were five other continents to explore. I would say that my favorite edition is 3/3.5, but I would happily play 1E or 2E if someone invited me to join a group, as long as they had gotten rid of the silly level limits for non-humans. It's all good up to 2008... and I have so much lore in the past three and a half editions that I see no reason to settle for a product I don't like just to keep spending money. Wizbro has seen my last dime with the 4E core rules, and the only reason they got my money there was because I made the mistake of pre-ordering because I was intrigued by what I saw in the previews. :-P I understand that different people like different things... "Remember, you're unique, just like everyone else."

Playing in the Realms since the Old Grey Box (1987)... and *still* having fun with material published before 2008, despite the NDA'd lore.

If it's comparable in power with non-magical abilities, it's not magic.

Eh, I doubt the WotC designers knew that far in advance what they were going to do to the setting in 4E. Remember, we are talking about what happened eight years ago.

I play 4E because it's the most fun for my group. I find combat a lot more exciting now, with the movement and more fluid possibilities.

As for a "version" of the Realms, I am using the 4E versions because I like that the Realms are now a more fantastical world, more so than the monsters and magic. I like the nodes and other ideas in it.

Sure, it can be in any version. I hope everyone plays what they enjoy and have fun! I do like the latest version myself but perhaps it's because I like the history I have available to me as well.

As of late I have been using 1st edition but I have no beef with 2nd or even 3rd edition.

3.x for rules, because it is flexible enough for my group of friends to run pretty much any character concept. For instance, our one friend's Fighter/Rogue/Wild Mage was a lot easier to put together in 3rd than in 2nd. (I never cared for dual-classing rules).

For FR lore though, everything that came before 3rd ed is superior to what wotc put out. Which is a bit of a shame, really. I have the 4e FR books (second hand, though). I don't really use much of that information.

I played 2e the most simply because I had more friends that played back then yet I believe 3e is the best ruleset.

I use the 4E ruleset and the 4E Realms.

I do this purely for convenience: everything for PCs is in the character builder and I can stat up monsters and NPCs very quickly using the monster builder.

If a real, functioning character and monster builder for 3.5E was invented tomorrow I have no doubt that I would switch back. I think, too, if the character builder allowed for meaningful customisation I would switch back to the Realms as at 1372 DR and ignore every novel and everything else that came after that point.

I use 2e rules w/Skills & Powers, but also add some of the versatility and some of the prestige classes found in 3.5e.

Currently, I'm playing in two 4E games set in the Realms of 1479. I do play in a 3.5 campaign (the Shadowdale adventuer) and it's loads of fun too.

I had them removed when I started playing in the late 80s early 90s. Recently I have incorporated stat bonuses based off Castles and Crusades and a resolution system that is much more unified. Still I'd say my game is about 85-90% 2e.

I have just recently aquired The Old Grey Box, and also have a fair amount of 2nd and 3rd edition lore. I'm considering running some games with a reset to the OGB and using the interesting odds and ends from the other products, probably with 2nd ed. and skills and powers.

I will never play 4th. ed or buy the new realms guide, the less I know of it the better.

We have been playing 2e for 15 years now and are still happy with it. We treid both 3rd and 4th edition but always fall back on the good old 2e books. It might have something to do with the fact that we know the 2e system like the back of our hand, but i like to believe that it`s the feeling you get when you sitt with the old books with old scars and memories in you hands that keep us playing 2 e :)

The version I play most is 3rd Edn (but not 3.5). In second place is 2nd Edition (skills and powers).

Although our games are heavily RP-based and include close to none calculations and stuff, we try to stick to 3/3.5e. Tried 4e, but meh, even by skipping some rules it just doesnt give the same feeling.
