Personally I am a guy who likes everything to "make sense" and conform to a set of physical / magical laws. Not conforming to "universal laws" seems like little kids imagining their toy guns and going "bang bang bang" at each other, followed by "I hit you" "I have this magic shield" "No you dont" ...

For the real world its physics and if there is a story about a guy who can fly like Superman there needs to be a believeable explanation as to why he can do that to make the story believable / not annoying.

For a fantasy world based on a roleplaying game the "laws" is the roleplaying system and if you write about a dragon and there is no dragon in that system it is going to sound a bit unbelievable. So when a writer writes a story and uses magical effects that arent in the game it is sometimes a bit much for me to find the story believable / acceptable IF there isnt a decent explanation for this exception from the rule. Sometimes an explanation is not given and this kinda breaks the story for me, so I would like to ask how others feel about this dilemma.

I know to have a great hero you need a great challenge, but when the challenge is unbelievable the whole thing gets ridiculous. So what does it take for you to make a story unbelievable or doesnt it matter if its simply well written?

I want my Realms fiction to work more or less the way the Realms works. My preference here is more specific than some people's, which is fine, I have many other books to read.

The Realms isn't based on a roleplaying game, and roleplaying rulesets aren't the univeral rules of the universe but simply tools to help the GM resolve actions involving PCs (in D&D, specifically adventuring PCs). (For that matter, our world doesn't work according to 'physics'; physics is just a set of working models of certain physical phenomena.)

Most Realms spells and magical effects haven't been written up in game terms because there haven't been a hundred volumes of Pages from the Mages/Prayers from the Faithful. What more explanation for new magic would you want?
