I have been toying with the idea of running the realms with the Mentzer D&D rules also known as BECMI in the internet.

I figure that the realms are great no matter what kind of system you use so long as it's D&D.

My guess is that both Cormyr and Tethyr lend themselves well to use with this system and there should be few problems so long as the players trust me as a DM (Can't really play without that on pretty much any system) and that they accept not playing demi-human priests and leave that to NPCs.

As a benefit the rather simple but I would dare say elegant rules for running a realm and large scale battles can actually be beneficial to mid to high level lords in these realms (And I would dare add the Dales as well.)

Would any of you fellow forum members have any advice or opinions for this pre 4e Realms campaign ?( Do not have the 4e Realms book but do have a couple of 3e and 2e books)

Thankful for any feedback

Tazak Nymar.

Your choice of Cormyr, Tethyr and the Dales is, I think, a spot on location for playing a Menzter style game. You might have a bit of trouble adapting the Immortal rules to play, but the other boxed sets should be fine.

In fact, the proximity to Myth Drannor and history of Elves in the area work nicely with what is presented in those games insofar as the Elf character class.

Your main challenge would be translating NPCs - rather than going for a straight on conversion, pick a comparable class from the old Mentzer boxes set.

You would have the opportunity to play the large scale battles between the Zhents and a Dalesman coalition, for example.

Obviously the 2nd Edition stuff will be easier to translate to Mentzer... lol.

An example is how FR translates into video games. Various rules have been used exclusively for certain games. The NWN games, for example, uses the D&D 3.5 rules, but the BG Dark Alliance games have a totally different style, and so does Demon Stone. The main principle is that it is all FR and no matter what rules are used to play it, as long as it is FR, then its fun

I still have my original books that I got from the game store when I was 10. {sigh}

Edit: I usually get my pdfs from Drive Thru, but if you are interested in getting PDFs for D&D, I do suggest Paizo.com. RPG has them for $4.95 on average, while Paizo, since they handled stuff for Wasbro, has them for $4.00 on average.

I actually DO know everything. I just have a very poor index of my knowledge.

Sweet! I have the Basic set of those....at the time I really wanted all the other ones but I was pre-teen at the time so no $$$$. Great nostalgic stuff.

I'd highly recommend the Rules Cyclopedia for this endeavour...
