I am re-reading The Spine of The World, and I came across something that is bugging me. One of the supporting characters, Jaka Sculi, and his family are said to have originally come from the Blade Kingdoms. I have a decent knowledge of Realms geography, but this is place that I've never heard of. I looked at a map of Faerun but I didn't see it. Can someone please give a little info on the Blade Kingdoms?

The 2e Vilhon Reach tome contains a map that labels a small area of land just south-east of the Fields of Nun and east of the northern most expanse of the Chondalwood. This is "The Blade Kingdoms" and also the setting for the Council of Blades novel.

Thanks a lot, that was irking me. I figured it must be a small place for it not to be noticeable on the map of Faerun I was looking at, and I haven't read The Council Blades. Anyway, I appreciate the quick response, thanks again Sage. |

To give a little more info... it's a series of petty Chessentan fifes and city states(though in truth, most of them are towns) that perpetually squable among themselves. As the name hints, they are very similar in nature to the border kingdoms but with a much more deeply entrentched native nobility.
Imagine scatering bits of Waterdeep over a 100 square miles and then letting the nobles run the show. You'd have a fair idea of what the place is like. |

For me... It's definitely an area of the Realms that needs some serious overhaul. As it is, the Blade Kingdoms are wedged between Chessenta and Chondath, and yet the entire region has little cultural resemblance to any of its neighbours which only serves to further make it evident to us how the realm actually "does not belong there."
I think it would be neat to see the conflicted lands of the Blade Kingdoms, Chessenta, Threskel, and Unther get some treatment in the new material... an update to straighten out many of the inconsistencies.

I did this awhile ago, when someone else asked a similar question at WotC -
The Blade Kingdoms
Thats a small piece of my world map, and ALL locations are canon. The region appears on two different maps - the Vilhon Reach, and the Old Empires ones... and they don't agree. They have completely different locales for that region, so I just included all of them from both maps and applied them to the altered 3e map.
Cheers --- Mark

Small chance of this now - they exist at "Ground Zero" of the 4e changes. |

Or in fact, one of several "ground zeroes". :-/ |

I might have to do something about that then, eh? |

Well it could be a hold over from Jhaamdath, some survivors who made their way (or were already living in) the region. That's what I'd run with anyhow, a very insular community, xenophobic if you will, that has been living the Jhaamdathan lifestyle since the Great Fall.
I've never looked at the Council of Blades, so I don't know if it contradicts the novel but I think it's a pretty fun idea. |

I am very much looking forward to any sort of 'enlightenment' you may provide, O' Sagely one. |

It's nothing too definite at the moment. But some rather frequent discussions about the region with Tom Costa back in '07 [both here and at WotC] got me thinking about one or three new possibilities for the development of the Blade Kingdoms. I've since had the opportunity to revisit some of those discussions while working on the next stage of my current FR campaign. As such, I've started working up a number of fresh ideas that I may require input on sometime in the future. |
