Here and there I've picked up bits and pieces regarding the future of our beloved Realms. I've searched numerous scrolls that discuss 4e/spellplague/whatever the heck it is cause I can't really get a straight answer.

WHAT THE HECK IS GOING ON???

I have never "gamed" (novels only here) and I simply want to find out how this apparent change in timeline affects me. If anyone "in the know" could explain, without getting into the pathos of WotC's decision to go ahead with this move, I would love to know what this means for the novels going forward.

I apologize if I sound condescending. I don't mean to. I'm just really curious and in a rush. The two don't complement each other very well.

It's prolly easiest to read the already-released info for yourself.

Thanks for the links, Wooly. Seems like an odd move on WotC's part. Two more quick questions for all you learned scribes: In all 3 of the above links I saw mention of both Aberil and Toril. Could someone be so kind as to distinguish between the two for this reader? Second, what happens to established characters like Drizzt, El, Erevis, ect.? I'd imagine that, novel-wise, Drizzt is WotC's top money getter. The Drow as a whole also seem to be a top draw. Why destroy the Underdark?

If you ask me this could a good thing.Fans could make requests to Wotc coast of how they should go about this and maybe add things you've always wanted to see in the realms ect. Just a thought look a the good side of this. There can be a quest where you go find how to fix all this and rewrite what the spellpalgue has done to Faerun.and gain back the art of arcane.Theres a alot the fans can do to fix and get back your realms from Wotc (boycott) could work but maybe not. They see it as theres always others we can appeal to.Which sucks cause now they just craped on there loyal fans of the realms.(If they ever do say that)Which they will if they don't listen to long time players on how to go about this spellpalgue.

Call me a dour old cultist but these three link require signing in to Dragon Insider. As a pet peeve I have declined to replace my subscription to the paper mag with a digital access. This is not to say I am a stickler for paper per se. However: I would have liked WotC to have given me a choice. Now it seems that I have to pay for Realms-related updates and news that *used to be free on the website.* Bah, humbug.

So, a big "hear, hear" from me to the title of this thread!

You can read the article 'passing by' the required sign-in by choosing the 'printer firendly' option and the bottem of the text page.

However, I doubt that this will go unnoticed for too long....

It's gonna be like Wizard of Oz, clack your heels together three times and say "There's no place like home", it worked for me when I saw Episode I... no, wait, it didn't work then either. What the designers/mutilators/abusers/engineers of this new and cool Realms can totally claim for themselves is one acronym: FUGAZI.

The thing with Episode I (and II and III) is that it was at least decisions that were made by the creator of the Star Wars universe. With coming of the 4e Realms, these changes that are being implemented were cautioned against by Ed, but WotC decided to go through with them anyways. Maybe (borrowing MT's pipe dream), I will win the lottery and be able to buy the Realms copyright to give back to Ed.

If I won the lottery that big , I would lease them back to him for two personal FR short stories a year!!!

MMk... I have a feeling this will all turn out like the 5th age in Dragonlance. Big mistake. Interesting to think how they're gonna retcon it when sales tank.

<Gwyd grits teeth while chanting "I shall not rant">

4e will obviously change what we (others) will see in FR novels. If you liked the Realms as they were, you will obviously be ... displeased (...shall not...shall not...).

If you thought the Realms were "broken" -- but for some reason you were still reading the books of a setting you didn't care for -- the new direction might "fix" them for you and provide you with at least one edition's duration worth of entertainment.

Some of the place names shall remain the same ("Waterdeep" and "Cormyr" sound sufficiently cool, for example) but toss in a little bit of Eberron and a little bit of that ... and who knows what glorious new tales might be possible from a staff of New York Times List of Best Selling Authors ....

Ah ... I can envision it now ... war-forged bladesingers who are neither good nor evil nor neutral cutting their way through 20 evil minions at a time ... fighting rodents of unusual size on the edge of Volcanoes of Purple Doom ....

Sarcasm doesn't count as a rant, does it?

BTW

I have nothing but respect for the majority of writers and game designers at WotC. I understand that -- as employees -- they've got to play with with the cards they are dealt. At times, we'd all like to march into our boss' office and call him/her an id'jit. Then we start thinking about things like food, rent, kids college educations ....
