Hope this is the right place to post this. Which part of Tethyr was it? I think it should be mentioned in the novel War In Tethyr but I don't have that one. Thanks!
Mod Edit: Shifted to a more appropriate shelf.

I'm not sure, but I just started rereading that novel, so if no one else knows, I'll see if I can come up with something for you this evening. Have you checked Lands of Intrigue? |
Doggedly converting 3e back to what D&D should be... Sigh... And now 4e as well. |

Thank you! I have checked Lands of Intrigue, but no answer there. And I don't have Heroes' Lorebook either. The earliest reference to her I can find is among Azoun IV's army against the Tuigan Horde in 1360 DR. By that year she was almost 30, and I always wonder what her earlier life was like. |

I don't recall if it was ever established where she was born. She doesn't really come on the radar (as it were) until she becomes a mercenary in King Azoun's crusade vs. the Tuigan Horde. From this, she gets her money to buy Morninggold's vacant title, and the rest I believe is in War in Tethyr and Lands of Intrigue.
SES
PS: There might be a bit more mentioned of her if she got a write-up in Hall of Heroes or somesuch but I can't recall. |

Hall of Heroes was too early. The Heroes' Lorebook doesn't have any real info on where she was born or grew up. |

Indeed. The only real stuff we learn about Zaranda's earlier years, from Heroes' Lorebook, is the following:-
"Little is known of Zaranda Star's past except that she was an orphan and started her adventuring life as a wizard." [pg. 134]

Strange. I was thinking Heroes' Lorebook, but my fingers typed out the other title. Weird. Ah well. Sorry for the slip-up.

only references I could find were that she was born in 1331. lands of intrigue and the grand history of the realms. From what I read, it does appear that she was from other than Tethyr and I saw many references about old friends from Waterdeep. that and she was the "peoples choice for monarch" |

to scererar: I suppose by "old friends from Waterdeep" you're refferring to Zelphar Thann, Vajra Valmeyjar, Onyx the Invincible and Timoth Eyesbright. As I recall, they and Zaranda all joined King Azoun's army, and that's where they knew each other. Looks like I'll have to make part of her biography myself. Wish it won't clash with something if I tell my PCs that Queen Zaranda was raised by a pair of shepherds, and studied magic in the now-ruined Nine Star Tower. Hoho... |

That should work just fine...and a goodly reason why she'd have come back to Tethyr during its dark times and try and wrestle some order from the chaos.
As for the Nine Star Towers, it's my opinion (as I don't know what WotC's up to with Tethyr) that that abbey was rebuilt by no later than 1380 DR with the support of the local counts like Gamalon Idogyr. And if the queen had been educated there, chances are it'd go up quicker with royal support (monetary and otherwise), not to mention have a benefit of consecration not just by the local priests but by the Crown Ecclesiastic as well.

In the unpublished and therefore non-canon story RECLAMATION, I described Zaranda as a native of Tethyr, born to a family of fisherfolk on the shores of the Ith River. Given the insular and nationalistic tendencies of the Tethyrian people, it seemed to me they'd be unlikely to accept as monarch anyone, regardless of her military accomplishments, who was not a native of Tethyr. That she's a commoner is barrier enough, as the events of the Siege of Matarma demonstrated. If she was common-born AND a foreigner, I can't see how she could possibly engender enough support to rule.
