I read Blackstaff, obviously

*SPOILER*

Khelbin dies at the end, yet the double diamond saga is based in later years and he is a character that is alive and well ... would it be considered 'canon' if a major character that had died is back to life without any explanation?

May the Realms live on

That's the problem with those novels, TSR said they were not canon but Wizards says something about them is canon. I still have the email when I asked about it and some of the events have appeared in canon material, so some form of the events are canon but what the events are is still being debated. :)

Of course Monsters of Faerun and the email reply I received took place before Blackstaff came out, so it could have invalidated both sources. So, the easiest thing to do is what Wizards originally said, it's something Volo wrote so it may or may not be accurate except for the entry that is in Monsters of Faerun. Or just say that the Khelben that is in the DD novelettes is Tsarra who acted like Khelben instead.

For some of us, books are as important as almost anything else on earth. What a miracle it is that out of these small, flat, rigid squares of paper unfolds world after world, worlds that sing to you, comfort and quiet and excite you... Books are full of the things that you don't get in real life - wonderful, lyrical language, for instance, right off the bat. - Anne Lamott, Bird by Bird

Yeah, that's what I was going to say.

"Instead of asking why we sleep, it might make sense to ask why we wake. Perchance we live to dream. From that perspective, the sea of troubles we navigate in the workaday world might be the price we pay for admission to another night in the world of dreams."

Are these books a different experience if read in a different order (I think I heard something about that one time)

Honestly, I don't recall since it's been over a decade since I read them but if I recall right, you could read them out of order.

Indeed, I really don't recall it making much difference. I read a few in publication order, and others haphazardly. It didn't create too much of a problem for the most part.
