I understand that the spellplague is going to "reshape" a lot, and please don't respond with personal feelings on that. I'm wondering if anyone has heard any specific information as to what they plans to do with Lolth and the existing backstory of Orcus and Kiaransalee. The reason I ask is that I find it interesting that the Worlds and Monsters piece has Lolth being a goddess of the Night. Makes me wonder if Shar isn't going to end up dead, though I was originally thinking she would become the "Raven Queen" mentioned in the same book. Of course, this could also be an aspect she gets by killing off her Daughter (though it would be weird, since Eilistraee is the light in the darkness). It also states that Lolth's demonweb pits is in the Abyss, which I'm wondering if it will revert back to there in 4E or will she have been able to somehow pull it from the Abyss and have a domain in the Astral Sea. Similarly, I realize Kiaransalee is defeated (not necessarily dead, as she's just no longer recieving deific power, but whatever she had is still stored). Unlike Orcus, she was never slain (Orcus was slain, THEN his name was removed). Effectively, I see this as she won't be in use in 4E (personally, I like the idea that she has to become a servant of another similar deity like Velsharoon or Orcus, who offers to counter the high magic spell in return for recieving a large portion of her worshippers power). However, with the existing history still exist of Orcus having been destroyed, been made into tenebrous, then been reborn... or will it be wiped clean in the "spellplague".

Demonweb pits is still a part of the abyss in other settings and I belive Worlds and Monsters is non-setting specific right? |

Not as far as I know, and I try my best to keep up with 4E news.
We know some details about 4E's Core Lolth, but that may not translate to the Realms. |

Since the Wizards apparently want to do it simple, I would expect that they keep the Core stuff alive in the Realms too, i.e. Lolth is very much part of the drow set up in 4E (see article on elves). Furthermore, TGHotR speaks about events in LP III, i.e. Lolth trying to subdue Ghaunadaur but fails. That Drizzt novel tells us that the good drow have failed too, i.e. Eilistraee's kin seems to have vanished.
Orcus is very much alive, whether in Realmspace or not cannot be said. Given that he (his priests) was active in Vaasa before and a power lurks there now and is "producing" warlocks, you may get the point.
Kiaransalee as well as Selvetarm and Vhaeraun have been removed from the Realms with a purpose. What the idea behind that purpose is I cannot fathom, but as was spelled out in the less than satisfactory Drow of the Underdark - written by 4E designers - tells us that there is no drow deity worth its name besides Lolth. Removing these various deities from the roster removes quite a bit of workload for WotC, workload that is required for all those new nifty feats, tricks and whatnots of 4E. Do keep in mind that in 8 years of 3E, barely half of the previous FR material was sufficiently updated to the new edition, and probably just 20% of the faiths got a full write up. Never say never, as the saying goes. I for one, can happily life with -30,000 years of pre-Spellplague Realms (and night two centuries of deities). |
