hey this might be the wrong Forum but where would I find a Chronology of the Realms Novels? I'm an Avid RAS fan and also enjoy Ed Greenwood and would like to find out more about how the Realms have been shaped and I can't find a timeline for the novels, or if you just wanna tell me what you think I should read and in what order I'd apreciate it!

| k, thanks guys :-) can ya'll tell me the key books that someone basically HAS to read to understand all the main points? cause the only other fantasy I've read is Dragonlance and it's much easier to follow than this because it doesn't have any stand alone novels. |

 There you ask something.... You could start reading almost anywhere, if oyu so like. There are a few 'main charcters' that have been featured in a series of novels. There'd be the 'Elminster' series, the 'Arylin' series, the 'Drizzt Do'Urden' series and 'Erevis Cale' that IMO are the most prominent characters in the novels. But to get to know the Realms and a fealing of what the Realms are you do not have to read any of those neccissarily...

| k, I'm actually almost done with Elminster and I've read every single thing that RAS has wrtten for FR so I guess thats a good start. I'll go check out that scroll right now :-) |

There really are no "must reads" that are "required" for understanding the timeline. You really can start reading wherever you want.
That being said, there are novels that are consistently recommended. I think there's a stickied thread on this topic in the Novel Forum (OK, I see that thread has been linked already :)). |

| ok, just one more question, sorry guys..... ummm what are the most popular books about mages? like I know about Elminster and Khelban, but who are other Realm shaking spell hurlers? |

How do we measure what's "popular"? Book sales? Number of times it gets mentioned on the internet?
I would just look through the list and see what interests you, rather than worrying about what's the most popular. |

| hehe Fillow I feel ya, I've read the first two Archwizard books...... and I went to my local bookstore and picked up like 7 different books that bigin trilogies so I can get a better grasp of whats going on in the Realms, and basically what I've been looking for in all this is, What books change the Realms, for instance the time of troubles was a big deal, and if you hadn't heard about it then when people talked about how El heald the powers of Mystra for a lil while you wouldn't understand. |

I personally prefer the novels that don't drastically change the setting.
However, that doesn't answer your question. So, I'll list the setting-changing novels I can think of off the top of my head. :) Remember though that "setting-changing" is probably relative rather than objective:
--The Last Mythal trilogy
--The Year of Rogue Dragons trilogy
--The Lady Penitent trilogy
--The Haunted Lands trilogy
--The Threat from the Sea trilogy
--The Avatar trilogy
--The Return of the Archwizards trilogy
--The Twilight War trilogy
Note that I never recommended that these RSE novels should be read before non-RSE novels, nor do I believe that RSE novels are "more important" or "better", either from an artistic viewpoint or in terms of how they fit into the setting. |

Mmh, with 4th Ed. up on the horizon this will no longer be of particular need to understand the Realms. Not even the designers will see a need for that in their works anymore, for all of what's my guess.
Another thought: my impression is that the books not worried with RSE have much more open word space to spent on the supposidly trivial things that detail the Reamls, the small and lovable tidbits of realmsean every day life. Thats why I liked books such as King Pinch & Yellow Silk so much...

Further more, the WotC site list has the advantage to permit to rank the novels by year, author, type, title.
