So our group was planing on playing this weekend and we've decided to make it a dedication to Gygax. We were thinking of pulling out the old school modules and having a weekend trip down memory lane. The Lost City, Keep on the Borderlands, Temple of Elemental Evil, White Plume Mountain, and Under Illfarn were all mentioned.

So far the plan is to roll up new characters, and have a marathon of some of the original stuff that we all remember.

Any suggestions would be awesome.

Something I saw here at EN World (originally from theRPGsite): worldwide "GaryCon" this weekend. It's basically what you suggest, but semi-official.

Indeed. Damon, myself, and a few of our friends will get together this weekend to pay tribute to the father of our hobby that has shaped my life in many, many ways.

A moment of silence, a tip of the hat, and a roll of the dice to do our part in remembering a great man who gave us much.

Considering that I'm already DMing the GDQ series for my group, I guess that is a tribute to Gary. And before that I ran Tomb of Horrors for them. Since GDQ is in its infant stage so to speak we'll pay tribute to him until most likely 2010 or so...

One of the local groups that I sometimes play with couldn't run their current campaign due to schedule conflicts, so they asked me to come in and run G1 - Steading of the Hill Giant Chieftain for them. We used the original AD&D rules and since this was a tribute for EGG, the players decided to roll up characters using the old school "straight 3d6 - roll your stats in order" method of character generation. Ended up with a party of two MU's (not mages, not wizards, actual MU's) two assassins, a fighter and a cleric.

We had a great time, gaming from about 7:30 PM till 4AM. I was very surprised how quickly the 1E rules came back to me. I guess it really is like riding a bike - once you learn, you never forget how to do it. Within 30 minutes of getting behind my 1E DM's screen, I was accuratly quoting rules and running the game.

In addition to having a great time, we all shared our early gaming memories. It was kinda like cleaning out an old attic - we kept digging up treasured memories. Between those wonderful memories of late night D&D games in my parents basement and a ton of laughs, it was certainly the most fun I've had gaming in a very long time.

"Over the Mountains
Of the Moon
Down the Valley of the Shadow,
Ride, boldly ride,"
The shade replied,
"If you seek for Eldorado!"

The one gaming friend that I have left and I are planning on a Gygax night. We will most likely start a new campaign and I will add some of the classic modules from Gygax and others into a FR setting.
I almost want to box up my beautiful Greyhawk boxed set. It's almost like new, but then I think GG would want me to use it.
