This comes from the new Count Down to the Realms article. I found it disturbing yet slightly intriguing. I personally don't want FR going the way of Magic: The Gather and WoW....actually I would hate it. But I see some glimmer of hope in it.....I am an optimist in these matters. Here is the clip, I am curious what everyone else thinks:
Tone and Feel
One part of creating a new edition of the Forgotten Realms is re-envisioning the look of Faerûn and creating a new interpretation of this classic fantasy setting. We’ve decided to shift the visuals of the setting toward a slightly more fantastic look, drawing inspiration from many sources—for example, the exquisite visuals of artists such as Roger Dean or Frank Frazetta (without the nudity, it’s a PG game). We sometimes think of this as playing D&D in a world that looks just a little bit like the cover of a Yes album. High fantasy doesn't mean that the Realms are turning into a magical steampunk setting. Eberron already has elemental-powered airships and trains, and that is not the direction set for the Realms.
Instead, the landscape itself is often spectacular, striking, and magical. Of course each region maintains its own distinctive flavor; Waterdeep isn’t adrift on a floating earthmote, and the Dalelands still have plenty of farmland and forest… with just a little touch of the fantastic here and there.

I quite liked the existing feel of the Realms. I think that trying to make it more fantastic is going over the top, and thus making it less fantastic.
I mean, how does floating motes make something more fantastic, when the setting already has flying cities, the Falling Tower, and the Temple in the Sky? |

i simply can't understand how you can ignore all the outcry of the fans and still procede so quickly. you can't improve much on 3.5's feel and faerun certainly doesn't need it. the only reason i find is $$$$$$$$$. a sad but real part of any corporation.

| I said this already, but I too already enjoyed the feel and tone of the Realms. I didn't think it needed floating islands and weird, monolithic structures of unknown origin in every square mile of space. |

Besides, we have floating islands and the like in other D&D settings already like in the City of Stormreach... If you like it, adventure there but leave the FR as they are without floating thingies and crystal mountains appearing out of thin air, err - my bad it was the merging of Toril and it's.....
whatever! *sighs*

Let us wait the release of 4th edition for the FINAL judgement...
But I believe that the signs are not good... |

| The 4E Realms sounds very Eberron to me, not that I have anything against Eberron but it's not FR. |

There were floating structures in the Realms, too, it's just that they weren't all over the place. :-/ |

I don't know that anyone here has declared a "final judgment" yet. People do have opinions though, and I think that's perfectly valid. No less valid than saying, "I love the changes so far!" |

| All I have to say is that I liked the tone and feel how it was, and I do not think that with all of the other changes that they have made to the 4e Realms, that they should feel the need to change that as well. IMO "Tone and Feel" and "Continuity" should have been THE two things that they tried to keep, even if they decided to go through with all of the other changes. Also, with Brian and Ed on the job, I know that those are two things that are important to them, which is why I will at least give the 4e FRCG a read-through in Borders. |
