I'll post some of mine in a few days... I've got a list, with notes, of every name I've used in my Hooks, but I want to add to that all the people I've mentioned in my Lords of Waterdeep articles. |

I shamelessly steal names from books. I'll take the first name from book X and the last name from book Y.
I'm terrible at coming up with original names. Terrible. :) |

Mine, too. And even if I split it into several posts, I don't think anyone would wade through all of those pages. We use "minor" NPCs a lot in my group, and the names created for a single campaign may literally come down to a thousand or so (depending on the campaign's length, of course).

I once had a druid called Arlyn Briar.
Most often I'm trying to give names that go with the profession or with the race, examples are Daren Ironeater (Dwarven fighter) or Valeran Flinkfeet (human rogue) - last one a mix from german and english, something like nimblefeet.

These are Purple Dragons from my current Cormyr Campaign (based in Thunderstone) and are all human male except noted. Not all have surnames, and some have 'knicknames' that will become their family name if they get married/have children.

The following are all Blades:
Gwillon 'Owlbear Fodder' Castleforn Grenth Blackbarrow Lonnel Woodshill Taneth Bowsmith (F) Krysten Stararrow (HE F) Jonnel Elmcroft Gatlim Greensward Illarae 'Illa' Skatterhawk (F) she calls herself Illa and no one but the Lords know she is of the Skatterhawk family Szellin Huntinghorn (F) (though wrong side of the bed) Bryn 'The Boar' Corluth Wavenar Hethdan Ironsmith Eridan 'Darksword' Raugh Moonmantle (roar-g) (HE M) Haardan Hethcanter
The following are Marshfolk from the Vast Swamp who have signed up: Vora-Shan Shae-Van Willia-Zan
All marsh folk end in **an and this is the family/tribe names

Well,
will think of a few more when I find the motivation:
Laurinadas (obviously an elf) Mace Anvilfist (yea, yea, I know not very creative, but all my dwarven characters end up with Mace as a first name)
there are others, but I usually write them down and forget them after the encounters are over...if my players want to meet some of their friends, I have them in my notes |
Mace's not so gentle gamer's journal My rants were harmless compared to this, beware! |

Oh I don't need help, I think I am pretty good with coming up with names, I just think it's cool to see what other people have come up with.
When DMing, I usually have to make up the names of the majority of the players. The current group has 4 players and me. I came up with two of their names because they couldn't think of anything outside of Dirk and Cyrus. The other players I didn't help didn't fair much better. One stole a name from Magic The Gathering, and the other used the name Donan.
Seeing other people's names does help though. I don't like using other people's names unless it's for an NPC, but if I see one I like a lot I don't have a problem using it as a source of inspiration for a similar name. For instance, your name, Ozzalum. I may look at that and come up with: Feralaum or Aolaum or Ozzamel etc. I'd just play with the name until I settled on something I like. |

Here are some of the names for my favorite characters. They're not too original, but I like them as they suit the character...even though they're usually a tip off
Milo Mosstouch - Halfling cleric/rogue/shadowdancer Hans Lightfinger - Halfling Roguey type Merister Mensbane - Human Bard/Assasin Fenar Anvilcaster - Dwarven Cleric/Fighter/DD Hagash - basically a human, but I play him as a 1/4 orc followe of Yurtrus Metatarsilo Nimbledexheimerwitz IV - Gnome rouge/wizard Firelle Brimston - human evoker
OH! Phoslavore - is the name of Firelle's familiar which is derived from the ingredients of a red canned cola product
( yes - metatarsals are footbones, but it sounded better than Metacarpilo ) |

LOL! I never thought of that. Nymphus was a character I created back in the mid 90's when I used to play Dragonlance. So in this case, I thought of the name before Rowling. |

Alright, I'll post some names, too, because I found this name list (a Word-file) on my hard disk by accident as I was organizing my files.
NOTE: these are *all* names for elven *females* that I submitted into a "competition" organized by Elaine Cunningham about a year ago. In retrospect, I noticed that there seems to be many "variations" of the same name and some may also be (unintentionally) "stolen" from existing FR sources, but I guess it is understandable as I just typed them down pretty quickly in a "writing frenzy". I might not personally use all of them in my campaigns, as there are some "weak" names in the list, too.
When I find the time, I'll dig through some of my hand-written notes to post more names. I've got literally dozens and dozens of papers with names of NPCs and monsters, because my players always try to catch me "off-guard" by introducing themselves to NPCs they think (often correctly ;) I've improvised -- and being treated thus, I often introduce not only the NPC but his/her *family* as well (A quick example: "So, as you've shook hands with innkeeper Thungral and he has told you about his life, his wife Maeldre steps out of the kitchen and their three sons -- Jaerl, Onglor and Dorruth -- all sneak into the common room to stare at you. Their two beautiful daughters -- Jallandra and Chassilvae -- are busy cleaning the rooms upstairs." ). And there's another reason, too -- I think it makes the Realms feel more "vivid" and "alive" if everyone (regardless of how "important" that NPC may be) actually has a name and a story :)
Anyway, here's the list:
* * *
Rilyelan Maldaera Thilanin Lyvintal Amthalae Sharylein Laeranthe Ilchantra Nimlaithe Namathrue Laeranthra Ilanfael Olaershan Laernsparra Maethlyrra Evanlarae Raelfaun Aumshyrra Evanariel Mhaelve Imthalian Ilithlaen Illaniath Ilmoiryn Nimraele Thilmaera Jallarnya Thilannin Daelynshar Thaeleshin Seluevian Calathrian Gilduvian Amthilvan Elamshar Ilaerlatha Vennithae Laethilde Alaeraenfil Selumtiara Eluannar Chiandran Naerithlyn Cyralfae Lhaeshyn Vanthrelda Asminjael Amlanneir Larithflyn Phalandrae Elamrune Filroana Thaelglarra Shaelyrr Laestryn Phendalar

I think, by popular consent, the best two names I have ever come with are "Pongrat Bogin," priest of Ilmater, and "Kim," Priest-Librarian of Deneir. Why "Kim"? Necause "Kim" appears to be an androgynous 11-year-old human (but a full dwarf by legal adoption) and no one has ever succeeded in discovering Kim's gender -- ever.
