Not a big fan of the Sauhaugin(sp?), but still liked the story. Maybe I will read the Terror from the deep books after all.

Mel Odom (no relation) is one of my fave FR writers. I enjoyed this one, but I wish Wizards had him write a story that involved something else other than the "Terror from the Deep" wars.

Yes, I did get a sense of deja vu from this story, I had to say. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the story's flow as well as the characters, like the sea elf. Still, like some other stories in this anthology, I found myself wishing there was a bit more to it. For example, a part of me kept thinking that something among the lost cargo would turn out to be interesting and unexpected, but it wasn't--in the end, it was just a McGuffin.

"Instead of asking why we sleep, it might make sense to ask why we wake. Perchance we live to dream. From that perspective, the sea of troubles we navigate in the workaday world might be the price we pay for admission to another night in the world of dreams."

To me there are two kinds of FR writers: those who take some risks with the direction of their stories and those who don't. Mel Odom tends to be in latter, smaller group.

Really enjoyed this story. I'll likely pick up the Terror from the Deep books from Mel now. Liked the main protagonist and setting most of all.

Reading this story reminded me that I have yet to read the Threat from the Sea trilogy. Well, from this I can tell it must be good, and my brother says the trilogy is good, so I'm looking forward to it. Great to see some work from Mel show up again.

I liked this well enough, but wished it had revealed a little bit more about itself. That said, I disliked the underwater fight scenes intensely, as they were just too unbelievable, and that jarred me straight out of the suspension of disbelief. There is a reason most underwater weapons are of the dagger and spear varieties; one cannot swing a weapon and still be effective.

Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but since when do sirines have male parents? I thought their sole manner of procreation is to mate with a humanoid male and then give birth to female young. That Rytagir received his magical pearl from a sirine's father -- classic, if somewhat overused damsel in distress theme -- sounded fine until I went and researched sirines -- as I was unfamiliar with the creature type.

Some nice lore to be had in this tale, among others the word Serr'tel'quessir. I'm going to assume -– since it is so close to Ssri'Tel'Quessir -- that it's the sea elven (alu Tel'Quessir) dialect version of the word drow.

Oh, and can anyone tell me what silverweave is?
