I was especially impressed with his knee-pieces – maybe they can snap the nose of a goblin off

It does kind of look like a lightsaber now that you mention it. Funny when I saw it I thought of the Glass weapons and armor from the Elder Scrolls games. I can't remember about the earlier ones but Morrowind and Oblivion both have(green)Glass weapons that look very similar.
