Hey, question, since no one answered my earlier one. Do you think this is an interesting way to handle the Spell Plague:
Basically, not only does it cause Saving Throw vs. Insanity but those that succeed but choose to voluntarily sever themselves from their magic. Thus, everyone loses their magical abilities and for a brief time it's a sane Sorcerer/Wizard-less society.
Like Dragonlance's switchover to the Saga system. Thus the player characters have a bit of a chance climbing up the ladder hero wise. Thus, everyone is trying to research new sources of magic to replace Mystra.

You could run a very Call of Cthulu style of game if you do that. My assumption below is a 3.5 game, utilitzing some rules from Unearthed Arcana, the Tome of Magic, and Complete Arcane.
The PC's have a chance in this case, but they don't have the normal magical resources that they normally would. I would definitely use the variant from UA that doles out sanity points. (My personal rule of thumb is that you start getting loopy at your wisdom score, and you start really going nuts for every +2 above your wisdom score, and each +2 results in a will save (DC=amount above your wisdom score +10), failure indicates you gain a dementia/psychological problem. My favorite would be multiple personalities (and the extra personality is a dragon ). You could even use a "taint" score for some of the more "vile" villains.
The "horrors" of the game could include some of the really nasty demons and devils (which are using extraplanar magical sources instead of the weave), and Shadow Adepts & others (alienist PrC comes to mind) could feasable use spells and that could affect the mental states of those around them. Even further, Binders from the tome of magic would likely be less unstable (Mystra could even become a Vestige, providing magic from beyond...).
Mind you, I don't like and won't be using the spellplague in my game, but I am happy to help you if I can.

| I for one am going to wait to see what the spellplague does or does not do, before I can decide any variants to something we really no nothing about. |

It's the Realms-shaking event that's ushering in the 4th Edition changes to the Realms. We really don't know much about it, beyond what's at the end of The Grand History of the Realms. |
