I'm thinking of running a 2E game set in an alternate Toril where the assassination attempt by Cyric and Shar against Mystra was thwarted; the Goddess of the Weave survived, the Spellplague never happened. I need some help though, mostly ideas about what happens from 1385 DR onward (I was thinkin about re-interpreting the Roll of Years somehow), and also which adventures to use in this campaign (I'm pretty bad at writing modules).

For starters, we don't have the stupid shrinkage of the Faerunian pantheon (but wait! Asmodeus becomes a greater god by consuming Azuth! And let's bring in Zehir too!) Lathander might still become Amaunator. We don't have Laerokund replacing Maztica, Anchrorome and Lopango. Szass Tam still succeeds in consolidating Thay as an undead nation under his rule, but the Dread Ring ritual fails because Mystra swung the banhammer faster than our esteemed space hamster. The Zulkir of Divination stays alive. The Zulkir of Transmutation still gets murdered when Szass Tam gets the instructions for the Dread Ring Ritual. All other Zulkirs despise Szass Tam and plot to retake Thay. The Rotting Man keeps his vigil over Dun Tharos. The Spirit Soaring remains standing. |

The Spellplague
* Shar uses the Web of Shadow to sever Mystra from the Web. For a time, it works, unleashing storms of blue-white fire and lightning across most of Toril. The blue-fire storms create magical instability throughout Toril on a scale not seen since the Time of Troubles. This event is known as the Spellplague, as virtually the entire planet becomes a gigantic zone of wild magic.
* Mystra’s loss of control over the Web also causes instability in the Shadow Web, leading to a resurgence of wild magic. Savras and Mask help Malyk evade Talos’s watchful eye. Malyk regains control of the wild magic, diverting Shar’s attention at the crucial moment and preventing her from delivering the fatal blow to Mystra.
* Cyric then attempts to kill Mystra... and, much to his chagrin, provides her with Leïra’s power (her death and the assumption of her powers during the Time of Troubles having been a ruse...). This sudden influx of power, combined with Azouth’s timely assistance, allows Mystra to regain her composure and absorb the Web of Shadow into the Web.
* Mask, taking advantage of Shar’s weakened state, recovers the attributes he lost during the Time of Troubles, becoming once again the Lord of Intrigue. Then, with Leïra’s help, he steals the title of Master of the Night from Shar, while Leïra seizes the title of Guardian of Secrets.
* Mask attains the status of a lesser god.
* Cyric’s plan to kill Mystra, with Shar’s help, fails miserably, leading to his downfall. He loses most of his powers, becoming a demigod (madness).
* Mystra frees herself from the last traces of her mortal being (Midnight of Deepingdale), fully embracing her divinity. She regains complete control of the Web and is reincarnated as Mystryl.
* Selune, seizing the opportunity presented by Leira and Mask, manages to wrest Ibrandul (the caverns) from Shar’s grasp.
* Deprived of all control over the Web, of the powers gained during the Time of Troubles, and of those stolen by Mask and Leïra, Shar loses her status as a major goddess and is reduced to that of an intermediate goddess.
* Taking advantage of Cyric’s downfall, the last offspring of Bhaal (murder) goes to the Bridge of Boreskyr and performs the ritual necessary for the return of the god of assassins (who regains his status as a minor god). The waters of the river are thereby purified.
* Velsharoon seizes the Horned Crown and places it upon his head in the hope of claiming the last remnants of Myrkul, thereby sealing his fate. He is brutally overwhelmed by Myrkul’s power. Myrkul regains some of his powers (decay, old age, twilight, autumn) as well as his status as a minor god, while many of his former followers return to him.
* Velsharoon narrowly escapes with necromancy, necromancers, and the undead. Lichification and evil liches fall to Mellifleur. Decay and corruption, meanwhile, are Moander’s domain.
* Baine supports the return of Bhaal and Myrkul. In return, they swear allegiance to him.
* Malyk returns as a demigod (wild magic) and swears allegiance to Mystryl.
* Leïra (illusions) makes her grand return. Her disappearance during the Time of Troubles was the result of her collaboration with Mask and Savras. The trio used Cyric to reach Shar without Mystra’s knowledge.
* Mystryl places Azouth, Leïra, and Savras on equal footing; they become minor deities and swear allegiance to her.
* Halaster is sent back to Toril by Mystryl as a token of gratitude for his services. He played a decisive role through his skillful use of chronomancy and his in-depth study of the Codex Apocrypha, a sacred book of Malyk. |
