To answer the OP, I've been running the Realms since 3e. I've always loved the world. Between it and Middle-earth, I could run RPGs forever. Those two worlds have everything I want out of fantasy, and I feel much more comfortable tweaking the Realms than I do Arda.
My favorite Realmslore comes from 2e, but I use 5e mechanics to run my games. I'm not that great at math, my brain kinda freezes up when you throw simple arithmetic at me, so 5e allows me a system that isn't that tiresome to run. The lore that's come out since I started DMing has been kinda hit or miss, but the artwork has been very inspiring. What usually winds up happening when I plan a session is I make a base dish out of the 2e material I own, and season it with an NPC from this 3e supplement or that 5e supplement, a plot hook from a 4e supplement, and some legend that may or may not be true from a 3e supplement.
I treat everything, even Ed's own Lore nuggets as being filtered through an unreliable narrator, and adjust my personal "canon" to fit what's fun for the players in front of me at a given session, notating what I told them for later reference and making sure I as a DM give them information in a way that is still an unreliable narrator, never omniscient.
It's fun, I've built friendships and seen people become friends through this game and world, and I'll always welcome fresh lore to keep the waters from becoming stagnant. A closed canon is very hard to keep fresh and new, so if WotC or whoever wants to stir the pot, I might not like the stirring, but I will work with it, adapt, and overcome unless they make something so distasteful that I have a moral issue with using the lore. |
