Hi all, am currently trying to move Vecna "Eve of Ruin" in a more Realms flavored quest.
There is a goodess who has also Secrets included in her dominion/power/control area, there are also some elements in her history hinting about reforming the world after her own desires. (me interpeting it as sort of reshaping reality) Being one of the few participants mentioned in the creation myths commonly acknolwdged by sages and philosophers, was thinking to replace Vecna with Shar. She has so much potential, her dark plans so hard to detect, now my player group will witness the unfolding of Shar's greates work. And prevent it from happening.
The first chapter was easy to rewrite, the second can be kept allmost as it is, I guess.
Where I have some difficulites with is finding a matching replacement for Kas. Was thinking to Cyric, or an Avatar or Chosen of the God of Lies, as he might have some grudges versus her, after the misfired plans leading to the Spellplague. I took an alternative approach to the Spellplague prologue, where Mystra survived.
Wonder if there is a better match, any suggestions welcome

| Based on your initial thoughts, I would recommend Cyric's Seraph of Lies Malik el Sami. Cyric himself is imprisoned in the Supreme Throne for a thousand years because of his actions leading up to the Spellplague. |

I would substitute Mask for Kas.
Not the version of Mask described in the Avatar and Cyric novels. The effete bumbling buffoon so caught up playing with senselessly tangled webs of intrigue that he even traps and fools himself.
But instead the version of Mask described in the Erevis Cale and Twilight War novels. The darkly sombre, serious, menacing being. The one who sometimes wears the "mask" of a bumbling buffoon to fool others, when convenient, but whose true "mask" of shadows covers something incomprehensibly ancient and inhumanly powerful. The one which reminds you that monsters can lurk in shadows.
In one scene, this dark-Mask even describes himself as a Herald of Shar. A servant and ally of her darkness, in essence her trusted and loyal lieutenant ... at least long ago, if not anymore, since Mask is now allied with those who oppose Shar. A significant history is implied to exist between Mask and Shar but is not given detail in the novels - aside from witnessing the ruins that remain after these two (or perhaps a conflict between them) caused the death and destruction of an entire world.
This story seems to excellently parallel Kas as long-ago-ally-and-betrayer of Vecna. And Mask (as a darkly sinister, politely pleasant, and vaguely threatening character) is a fine piece of sophisticated evil to fill that hole in the adventure.
Perhaps the contrast of Shar (darkness) vs Mask (shadow) vs [insert LG-aligned player character here] (light) can be made to work in the adventure the same way it was contrived in the novels. Nothing wrong with stealing inspiration if in the end everybody has fun and fondly remembers being part of a good story. |
