I just wanted to share it here, as I see no one has done it yet. This is the highest resolution available for now (that someone at Reddit kindly shared, all the kudos to them), at least until January, when Mike Schley will release the mega full resolution version.
Anyways, here is the map https://ibb.co/Gf8053pK

Much appreciated. I've been wanting to get a closer look at this map. Kind of odd we lost 500 miles or so off the south end but the number of towns and sites included are nice. Maybe it got cropped for publication and Mike will release a larger version *fingers crossed*.
I had really really hoped it would include some locations from BG3, best guess is most the events take place somewhere between Elturel and Fort of the Morninglord, till the city is reached. |

Rogue: So what's in the general store? DM: What are you looking for? Rogue: Whatevers in the store. DM: Like what? Rogue: Everything. DM: There is a lot of stuff. Rogue: Is there a cart outside? DM: (rolls) Yes. Rogue: We'll take it all, we may need it for the greater good. |

The Forgotten Realms Interactive Atlas has the position of Moonrise Towers on it, so it's odd that Mike did not put them on this map as at least a nod to the BG3 material. But the BG3 map is a little awkward, putting mountains along the Chionthar where none previously existed, so perhaps they didn't want to mess around there too much.
It's great to see full confirmation of the return of the 1/2E layout, even if that means we have to return to the problem of not fitting the whole continent onto a map meant for book publication easily, the same reason the 1E and 2E maps also omitted the Shining South.
Obviously I will now be able to create 5E map using this as the base, and hopefully incorporate some of the BG3 material. |

Definitely some interesting things on the 5E map.
Of the 4E and 5E changes to the map, almost all of them have vanished. The main exception is that the Moonwood, Druarwood, Cold Wood and Night Trees remain unified as the Glimmerwood. The Great Glacier has also retreated further from Vaasa, with more of the Lugsaas Chain now in open countryside and the glacial lake known as the Sea of Frozen Tears left behind. Oddly, the rest of the very well-mapped Great Glacier is left blank (whilst Anauroch gets all of the detail we know from the more detailed 1E and 2E maps). Not sure what ideas were going on there.
Tymanther and Akanul have both just straight-up vapourised. Nothing is left behind of Akanul at all. In old Tymanther, the giant lakes are gone and Djerad Thymar has teleported 50-odd miles north to the end of the Smoking Mountains range. The Citadel of Black Ash has also disappeared from the 5E map; I thought maybe Thymar had replaced it, but it's a few dozen miles east of the Citadel's former location. Hmm. Skyclave also still exists as an inhabited city in Mulhorand, despite it being apparently torn down and destroyed in the Mulhorandi Rebellion.
Muranndin has also disappeared, though whether Murann has been retaken by Amn or seceded to Tethyr is unknown. Elturgard is still extant, though it's given as small regional name rather than a nation one. Sossal is also back on the map, appearing on an FR map officially I believe for the first time since the 20th Century! |

Absolutely love this map. It might really be possibly be the best thing about these latest new FR books, which I know many have criticisms about (myself included). I don't think it is 100 % accurate, but it's pretty good approximation. I know for instance, Mulhorand should technically have more deserts in the interior (which is described in the 1E Old Empires book) and Ed has tweeted that the country suffers further desertification in the current timeline.
As someone used to the 3E layout, seeing the Shaar for instance is noticeably different from the 3E version as it's much, much larger under this projection.
I really hope Mike Schley gets commissioned to do more maps that zoom in more on select regions, as well as showing some lands beyond this scope too.
It's really nice seeing so many lands restored from the Spellplague. This map is pretty handy even if you aren't running a game in the 5E era. |

Most of the terrain was returned to "normal" by the magic of the Second Sundering, so, the geographical changes were to be expected.
As for Tymanther, it was canonically destroyed by Gilgeam. I don't know why WotC endorsed fantasy genocide, but it happened. Djerad Thymar still stands, but whether it's a city of the dead or dragonborn still live there, it's unclear. Most of the surviving dragonborn fled to Calimshan, where they joined the new Sultana, who abolished slavery, defeated the evil genie, and sponsored some gnome artificer that made Calimshan the not-Eberron of the Realms.
People who wanted a return to fantasy Mesopotamia are to be disappointed, however, as current Unther is a wartorn country where Gilgeam kills everyone indiscriminately. Unther is literally described as a hell on earth. Only Messemprar remains independent (seem the Northern Wizards still rule it, and it's implied Ningal lives there), but the city is in dire straits, as Unther, Chessenta and Mulhorand want to conquer it. And, as for the Citadel of Black Ash, is said to be located in Unthalass, now.
As for Akanūl, it's not mentioned what happened to it. Brassune is still in the map, so at least they acknowledge it existed, but Airspur is now ruled by the Cult of Bhaelros, that somehow resurfaced.
As for Muranndin, it was destroyed too, though, Murann is still a monster city. Is seems nobody want to cross the wooden palisade that protects the city (it's not a joke, the book literally says that). |

| Now there is a landscape I can get behind. I'll not nitpick too many absent details as this is still a WiP as I understand it. It's sad that shifts in common aspect ratios have resulted in Chult and Halruaa getting the chop, but it's understandable. |

They weren't chopped, just not covered. The map is an homage to original and 1e/2e map, that covered the same areas

| I want to expand upon Unther as an antagonist, following its own enormous events. Im going to dive into some olde books and see what I can find. |
