| The environs in the game are so good. I don’t understand why people consider Baldur’s Gate the better game. |

BG1 is much less Linear than IWD. That's probably the reason. |

That, and it has more engaging characters (namely the various party members). |

| The best parts of Baldur’s Gate were the Durlag Tower and some other strange monsters. I don’t like the characters, really, and the intrigues of the plot are not hugely deep or appealing the way the ruins in Icewind Dale are. |

One of my favorite things about it? The mace called Three White Doves. It's almost like the Mace of Disruption from BG2. |

Update: I beat Heart of Winter last night just before bed. Now it's only the final boss of the main game left. Can't believe it. |

| Final Update: At 11:30 EST last night, I beat the core game itself. Fairly certain I was over-leveled for it but I made it happen. I may or may not go through Heart of Fury mode. Not sure if that has improved versions of various items like the sequel does. Not going to bother with updates on that if I do play, though. |

I was wondering if anyone has played this. If so, any idea what I should go with? For the record, I'm playing a Good-aligned/heroic party. I also heard this version has kits for classes, unlike the original (which I never got to play).
For the first character, I was thinking a Paladin, for starters, since I heard there is a Holy Avenger in this game. Which kit, I'm torn on that. Might potentially be my party's tank.
Second character, I was thinking either a Berserker (likely a Dwarf) for melee damage or a Dwarven Defender as a tank if the pally isn't such.
Third, I'm thinking an Archer (Ranger kit) for ranged support.
Fourth, I was eyeing a Cleric, since I heard they are very useful in this game.
Fifth, I was thinking a Bard, possibly a Skald. Mainly use magic and music.
Finally, I heard a multiclass Thief/Mage would potentially work. I also heard scrolls were scarce. This one would be my utility character and possibly sling spells around.
Could that party work well? My main concern is arcane spellcasting, whether I could have enough, too much or too little.
You’ve got solid frontliners, divine support, utility, and good ranged coverage. Your only real balancing act is arcane power, but a Skald + a Thief/Mage is enough to carry you through most fights as long as you manage scrolls carefully.
