As long as enjoyment is derived, originality (perceived or otherwise) is a secondary consideration at best. |
Stand with anybody that stands right. Stand with him while he is right and part with him when he goes wrong.
Earth names in the Realms are more common than you may think. |

I must confess I don't understand the reference for the D'tarig.

They didn't even bother to file off the serial numbers. Its right there along with Vistani as "not-Roma."
I think Bedine are Bedouin, not Taureg.

D'tarig were another group added to the Realms in FR8 Anauroch along with Bedine.
Basically, there are multiple examples of lazy and potentially problematic races in there. Bedine are just the more well known of the two. Bedine have been featured in more products and even referenced in 5E, whereas D'tarig are briefly mentioned in one of the Harper novels and the aforementioned FR8.
I was not conflating the two, just that Bedine wasn't the only liberty taken with ethnic naming in Ed's work.

It is the spirit of the game, not the letter of the rules, which is important. Never hold to the letter written, nor allow some barracks room lawyer to force quotations from the rule book upon you, if it goes against the obvious intent of the game.
Afterword, DMG pg 230. |

It wasn't just the bedine and D'tarig as you note.... the "Rus" basically hint at the Rus of this world possibly coming over.
Personally that's the one thing I'd rather see reversed in many cases. By that..... create a myth in which the people in OUR world taking on certain names be because some small group of people from Toril came to OUR world and incorporated with the larger population. This can be an interesting way to incorporate that many of the old gods/religions of our world were real... made an attempt to invade our reality ... and somehow got rebuffed from the world here. Of course, people in our world with a historian focus will probably hate this idea.... but as someone pointed out, its about the fun, not the truth. |
