We have a new poster who is posting about GTA (Grand Theft Auto). The GTA product is thoroughly immersed in modern-day violent crime.
IS THIS ALLOWED?

WELL SAID, GOOD SIR! Around these parts, we only deal in medieval fantasy violence (criminal or otherwise). |
Stand with anybody that stands right. Stand with him while he is right and part with him when he goes wrong.
Earth names in the Realms are more common than you may think. |

It is not allowed. The posts have been removed, and the banhammer dropped on that person.
Spammers seem to love coming in here and posting random crap. I don't know why they think we're a good target for it, but it's gotten to where I'm dropping the banhammer multiple times a week. |

Rumor has it, Mjolnir Man himself occasionally visits you for pointers. Can you confirm or deny? |

Spammers post anything on anyone's boards, so Wooly's ban hammer from hammerspace will need to be summoned occasionally. |

Lol, yeah, I think I've sent Wooly more private messages in the past 6 months to banhammer people than I've sent him private messages in the last 20 or so years that I've been on these boards. |

Does (much of) anyone else have such abilities to deal with such? I'd argue that's a lot of responsibility for one person. |

There are other moderators, however it appears Wooly is doing most of it.
I do not no how active others are. |
"Small beings can have small wisdom," the dragon said. "And small wise beings are better than small fools. Listen: Wisdom is caring for afterwards." "Caring for afterwards ...? Ker repeated this without understanding. "After action, afterwards," the dragon said. "Choose the afterwards first, then the action. Fools choose action first." These forums are -- sadly -- not as active as they once were, so it's not too bad. |

Well, one of us had to say it. |

Please explain to me how the original forum pertaining to what is presently THE most popular Dungeons & Dragons setting is effectively Deadsville while other haunts - pale imitations, at best - are thriving. What we have here is a storehouse of material easily capable of satiating a Forgotten Realms Dungeon Master for the rest of their tabletop gaming career. Plus, Candlekeep features the geekiest of geeks, to boot. |

Time marches on. Reddit and Discord have replaced forums, just like forums once replaced mailing lists and usenet. I'm sure there's still someone out there bewailing the loss of rec.arts.games.frp.dnd, too.
The other thing is this: Ed. Candlekeep wasn't anything special until Ed came and in made this the place to come and interact with him directly (well, via THO). And then the other creatives who followed him into the Chamber of Sages and made it even more popular. But Ed left for Twitter and his Patreon/Discord, and all the rest of the creatives were either let go or were freelancers that WotC decided they had no further need for. Time marches on.
And now Candlekeep is what it is; an "outdated" platform whose audience has moved on to other spaces. I don't say that as a damnation, I love this place. Bless all of you who are left and keep the discussion alive and keep adding to it. But I love it for what it is, a "storehouse" (as you say) of priceless material and memory. And hey, that storehouse is the thing that keeps Candlekeep uniquely relevant today; even if the forums have declined the archives of lore are still there, and that is why, in countless conversations on Discord and Reddit, and on the other dinosaurs of the age like ENWorld and RPGNet, discussions of Realmslore inevitably involve someone providing a link to candlekeep dot com. Those discussions are still happening, and they still involve Candlekeep, even if they aren't happening here.

(also, if Alaundo ever set up a gofundme or something to update the site to modern standards I'd glady toss him a couple bucks: but in the meantime, as a plan B, most of candlekeep dot com is up and archived on the Wayback Machine on archive dot org. If you have some spare change lying around, I would suggest donating to keep them up and running instead; not just for Candlekeep alone, but also for preservation of the wider Web itself)

Reddit is a forum of a sort: clunkier, unreliable in its retention of old discussions, draconian in its moderation (compared to Candlekeep) and full of pretty pictures designed to elicit Pavlovian responses which afford posters shallow "karma"/"up votes", yet it still follows the same basic formula. |

I for one am quite happy to shun the likes of Reddit or Discord (rather appropriate name). |

yeah, I just don't have real life time to go to Reddit or Discord for the most part. Plus, I know people here "GET" a lot of stuff I'm talking about, and I don't have to explain it. I'm also actually surprised here a lot, because I see people asking about NPC X or NPC Y or some event or other .... and I'm like WTH is that. The VAST amount of lore that came out in 2e that I just simple could not afford at the time, would not have had time to read (still don't), etc... just boggles my mind to this day. Plus, as time has passed and my mind has fermented 25 years of data OUT OF ORDER .... as in I learn something in 2e, learn something else in 3e, see something else in 4e.... and I link them across editions... it creates sometimes some really interesting ideas to me. |
