I'm looking at this product on drivethru and ebay. I'm just wondering, should I get a copy? What are your feelings on the Atlas? Is it worth it?

Karen Wynn Fonstad was very well known for the Atlases she worked on.
This Atlas is way outdated, obviously, but it's a quality product and it's one I'd readily recommend if you're interested in earlier material. |

It really tries best to provide novel-accurate maps and building interiors, for better or worse. I think sometimes those amazing early Realms novels took a bit of liberty to tell a great story, which can lead to some questionable designs when it is put to the Atlas for the buildings anyway. My fave use of the Atlas is to have it to hand while I'm re-reading a book, it can help visualise the journey of the heroes quite well.
But yes, the book is a high quality product and you can tell it was created by people with passion for Ed's Forgotten Realms and all the novels of the era. |

The book Atlas is very good, and apparently is still the go-to guide for Ed when he checks geographic facts. Karen Wynn Fonstad did splendid work. In fact, her son just this week confirmed he is digitising her entire collection of original maps (which also includes The Dragonlance Atlas, The Atlas of Middle-earth, The Atlas of Pern and The Atlas of the Land, plus the never-released Atlas of Narnia) at a very high level of detail, including her Forgotten Realms maps. I'm eager to see the results of that.
The Forgotten Realms Interactive Atlas from 1999 is more definitive, though. It covers the entire planet (not just Faerun and Kara-Tur), it featured the first-ever canonical entire world map and it has almost 900 maps covering hundreds of cities and villages, inns, castls, dungeons and even the entire star system. Rare to get hold of these days. |

And despite being made back in the days of Windows 98, it still works. Over the years, I've installed it on 98SE, ME, XP, 7, and 10. I've not tried it on Win11; I was just shopping for the hardware that will be my Win11 computer, earlier today. I'm sure it'll work without issue, though. |

Yup, works fine on my Windows 11 machine. I bought an external CD-ROM drive specifically just to be able to install it again. |
