Eye and the Hand

An attempt at a DMs log of events as they happen.

S. Z

Players Bryndellin "Brindi" Treesong, Kithlie Minus, Yarkin Heavenstone

08-27-22, Noon -5GMT

Three level one characters are sent on a "Find the missing courier" quest.

What happens this time? Well, this time there's spiders. Very sticky spiders and lots of them. What will the party of bog dwellers do when a Vortex spider from the Demi-Plane of Time makes it's new home in the marsh? Try not to die edition.

The lead in to the WTDC2 campaign.

Quick synops, to remind me later.

Yarkin and Kithlie finished off Raducal, Cleric of the Rabbit cult, broke the mind control over the cultists, saved 5 Grelven stalkers who only wanted to go home. converted 4 cultists to Ty'G.

Brindi and Kithlie carried on with their explorations while Yarkin was occupied. Encountered a Dazed and confused worg and rider, stomped/ burned them. carried on and investigated a dried shiny slime trail that lead to a protruding rock. on closer investigation, they discovered it was a mimic an had the fight of their lives.
Kithlie was severely beaten and abused by the nd of the fight. Brindi exhausted her magics bringing her back to health. They decided to head back to the shrine to recover before heading deeper into the Warrens of the Underpaths.

Tomorrows plan has them meeting a new PC, solving a puzzle DC 25 or physically solving a puzzle irl, finding a Bone Naga, discovering the ethereal attack on a spirit by way of item destruction and poising them to enter the Ruins of Corrant for the first time as the BBEG flees through a pool (if he makes it, PCs kill a lot of plans).

This concludes the prelude (Lvl 1-5) and opens up the characters to the next section of the game.

At first there were bats, asleep in their home. Along comes the party and disturbs the peace zone. They flutter about, taking swipes were it's warm, it's a small group of 12, known as a swarm.

The swarm could grow if careful they weren't, for hundreds of brethren hung above dirt. Accidents happened and Kithlie did spring. To the ceiling he jumped and grabbed anything. A rock side did happen and scattered the bats, The trio fled quickly, saying that's enough of that.

The pathways were wide and opened ahead to a room with a sermon being forcefully read. Kithlie snuck past, not wanting to tarry, Brindi held back to keep eyes on the scary. Yarkin alone, strode through the alcove and shrine. Not trying to hide, slow gait he stode fine. A call from the leader came out from the altar, Yarkin stopped dead, his face never faltered.

A discussion of faith and ethics occurredd. One sided it was to Yarkin, it's absurd. The leader did say that Yarkin was false, and divine inspiration cause Yarkin to pounce.
A battle ensued and Leader tried casting, and Brindi was ready with a thrown rock just for smashing.

Recap:

Wandering through the Fen, looking for any signs of the Grelves paid to go fight Orc and there's been nary a sign. Finding their way through the few allows Kithlie to find a passageway through the overburden to an extremely large tunnel system underneath.

Floating long the base of the tunnel is an invisible liquid that has a 'magical' distortion effect. Brindi managed to capture some in a bucket and Yarkin inhaled as much as he could. Kithlie gets a headache from touching it.

Now to start off this next session (Yarkin will not be here) I will be separating the party and leaving Yarkin near the stopping point of the last adventure and hopefully picking him back up for the following one but as y'all know, sometimes things happen and plans change. Let's see how today goes.

(Official plan: I've finally got my story for today.

Setting, the underpaths of the Corrant Fen Edgeland.

Giant tunnels hewn from the earth and roots, home to a host of nasties, all unrelated.

Psionic bunnies, Bone Naga, Ochre Jelly, A dazed Eye of Gruumsh and his equally confused Worg mount, a few Skelly bois and a specter.

The party will find cultists, clues and questions and it should be fun.

A primal spirit is also known to inhabit the area and may help or hinder them, who really knows how a CN primal spirit will really act.

Let's see how much of my prep actually happens.

Traveling swiftly, the trio bound for the lands of Sespech. They have no idea that right behind them are powers that want to do them harm. Travel was easy for the three with Kithlie and Brindi used to bounding through swampy forest and Yarkin oblivious to the normal trials that regular folk endure.

Breaking out of the forest, they survey the vast, rocky fen. Mushrooms and rocky knolls becoming so frequent as to be the distinguishing feature of the landscape. This was the land of the Serpent gods of old and it gave Kithlie Minus a headache. This was where adventurers dare not go and it is known to be ruled by Naga, Yaun-Ti and other sibilant speaking souls. A land rich in Hiss-tory with stories of sadness, love and loss. What secrets still lie undisturbed for them to uncover? Where are all the Grelves that have been sent here to fight? Why is Kithlie Minus getting headaches after entering...

Granny asks the group if they want to run another errand for her. Yarkin, appreciating the previous pay strikes a deal with Granny for food and shelter for his new faithful(7) in exchange for his services. Kithlie and Brindi both agree the standard contract of a Goblin 30%(10%) was fine.

Their task is to travel two weeks through wilderness to the edge of the swamplands and look for any signs of battle. The Grelves have been receiving tribute from Granny to keep the Orcs at bay but this recent attack is making her suspicious. She knows much could happen in a month and couldn't risk the travel now for fear of the camp falling apart.

Yarkin is found back at the first three Caravan wagons speaking with two Grelven tribalists and there's three Moorstags wandering around the makeshift camp. Sensing the approach of Brindi and Kithli Minus, the Grelves quietly and swiftly vanish into the forest.

After catching each other up on the recent events, the wagons are tied together and the Moorstags harnessed in place to haul the cargo.

The morning and afternoon went by easily enough. Come the evening stretch, the caravans Moorstags drew the attention of an Owlbear. Yarkin, riding in the back of the last wagon, was the first to notice the rapid approach of the creature. Calling warning to Kithlie and Brindi, Yarkin attempts a call for divine aid and looses a vicious streak of radiant energy just as the wagons wheels hit a rock. The bolt veers off and strikes a tree trunk.

Capitalizing on the misfire, Kithlie Minus leaps from the back of the wagon to the teetering tree and leaps back to the wagon, giving the tree enough of a shove to knock it down, on to the charging Owlbears hind end, nearly pinning it in place. Scrambling at the last possible moment, the owlbear narrowly avoids being trapped and suffers a severe wound.

Brindi, aware that something is attacking the back of the Caravan, summons a sphere of fire to roll as a mobile deterrent for whatever is back there.

Absolutely enraged by the audacity of the fleeing meat, the Owlbear makes a charge closing the distance and putting itself within striking distance. Passionately calling out to Ty'G for more intervention, he looses a stronger bolt, fueled by divine radiance and burns the enraged monsters face. The beast was still after that.

Stopping the Caravan after the threat was managed, the party set to harvesting and purifying the creatures remains.

Arriving back into Camp Ain, the group is stopped by the guards and informed of an attack on the camp while they were away. Finally admitted to the camp, the group retells the story of the adventure. Contract fulfilled, the party has a few days to restore themselves.

Yarkin takes all of his earnings and offers to build the camp a modest temple of healing by paying for the construction and materials. Offering sermons and healing to any in need.
Brindi is intimated by the increased security and people in heavy armor and silently withdraws to quieter spaces to observe the hustle of camp life. Changing into her wolfen shape, Brindi stalked around the camps perimeter and found a small colony of Vegepygmy called the Sprucelings. The druid never seeing one before was startled when a Spruceling gave clear indication it didn't want a wolf to mark it. Deciding peaceful coexistence was the rule of the day, Brindi went back to camp to sleep in her dirt dugout.

Kithlie Minus reveled as a folk hero with an armed escort of four guards, some wondered if it was a reward for valor and some giggled that it was so no one would have to get too close. Kithlie smelled unique.

Learning more of the attack through eavesdropping. A concern was raised that the Orcs to the east weren't the aggressors this time. The Orcs that attacked carried a new sigil and came from the south.

Trying to visualize the meeting between Yarkin (no description yet, Reborn, Cleric of Life) and Elven scouts in the Winterwood.

Aetlheggs, who was not too far away, in hiding, was watching the party fight it's rival. It stayed in hiding, watched the party drive away the planar interloper and then continued to watch as the party drove away with the trade cart. They didn't want it's food and they were strong food. They did Aetlheggs a favor so they can leave. It would wait until they go and then catch the other Unicorn. Aetlheggs is still the ruler of the Deepweb and will rebuild.

I forgot to mention the planar trapped spider with the tuning fork stuck in it's chitin. Trapped on the prime, every time it tried to go through a portal, the fork chimed and nullified the plane shifting. Spiders special was a disposal portal. It would break a portion of web, opening a small rift to a random plane. Normally used for garbage disposal, can also be used to dispose of threats.

During the fight, Kithli wanted to try to tongue grab the tuning fork and rip it out.

He made his hit, failed his strength and refused to let go after being asked repeatedly.

Fights continues, Kithli is hit by a paralytic and then has the spider work a disposal on them. The random plane rolled was Pandamonium and with the fork firmly stuck in the spiders carapace and Kithlie rolling to see if his tongue was stuck/wedged (it was), he ended up hanging in the air through a portal by his tongue, paralyzed and blind. The next round, Brindi decided to let off a Thunderclap to push the spider away from the portal it made thinking the spider was making an escape. It fails the saves/cheecks and gets pushed away from the portal, dragging Kithlie back to the prime. While Kithlies tongue is wrapped around the fork, the spider has full access to it's plane hopping abilities as the forks tone doesn't interfere.

Through sheer dice roll luck and a short acting paralytic poison, Kithlie regains mobility and instead of pulling his tongue back, he tries agan to get the fork. Makes all the checks, spider fails theirs and Kithlie gets the Steel Tuning Fork, banging it once more and having the portal nullified.

The spider tries a last ditch disposal attack, creates the disposal portal (Astral), tries to cast a drag net on Brindi and misses. Some rounds pass and through perseverance and fire, the party drove the spider off. Feeling fancy, Brindi decided to discard her fire into the portal and it was slowly closing. The fire lands squarely on someones carrots and the spell is reversed, reconfigured and returned as the equivalent to a maximized flamestrike that never ends. There is now a one way flaming microportal to the Astral for all time. The party decorated it like a campfire and left a sign in common that this is the eternal camp of Winterwood.

After defeating the Displacer Beast, the party moved forward with the search and happened upon a lone Ilmatari priest camping in the Deepweb. Rym the Speaker https://ddb.ac/characters/82535513/ftt8Rg.

The man had been given a sacred duty of using his body as the host for venom, poison and toxins in the area. The hope was he would be able to create a panacea to help his home city. The suffering man is covered from eyeballs to heels in various bug bites, welts, and boils.

The group found out about a unicorn glen, and a tunnel that lead to a strange tone.

Heading to the Glen because Brindi wanted to see a Unicorn, they approached respectfully and behaved well. Brindi was granted a free action boon and was henceforth unaffected by the webbing. Kithli stayed silent and looked for some food. Unicorns don't mean much to them.

There they learned of the Master of the Deepweb, Aetlheggs. Until the monster is slain, the unicorn is trapped in the glen. Their partner tried to challenge Aetlheggs and was slain.

The party asks where the monster is as the Tone sounds again and the unicorn says "There". The party, renewed by their encounter heads off to find Rym.

*One too many edit*

today, the party (2x Lvl 2) took on a displacer beast, ate a displacer beast, avoided a patrol of 6 hobgoblins, found a healer, spoke to a unicorn, fought off a Vortex spider and then shape changed into a moose when they needed something to pull the stolen supplies back. On the journey home, they happened to get surprise on the lost hobgoblin scouts, charge full druid wildshaped moose speed, hauling a covered wagon of trade goods being driven by a bullywug frogman into, through and over the 6 hobgoblins who never had any idea they were about to be trampled. No hobgoblin survived.

Brindi fights a few rounds, Kithli fights a few rounds.
Brindi predicts a pounce and braces her staff and Kithli misses her swings, the Beast as predicted pounces on Brindi.
Both fail checks and hits, the braced staff was as ineffective as the mistimed pounce.

Kithli has had enough and as their kill shot, they hooked their hand axe into the spine of the Beast(ending the threat) and then decides to eat it.

Notes:

Party made it to the caravan uneventfully,
Party examines the area, Finds the Caravan completely webbed with thick, sticky webs.
Fight with giant rats at the first three carts. Everything else intact, food rotted, liquids saved, furniture is fine.
Two bodies found, ring found on one.
Yarkin Heavenstone(Reborn) stays with the Caravan to catalog everything against the trade manifest.

Brindi(Human) and Kithli(Bullywug) head into the Deepweb on the hunt for the final Caravan wagon.
$ hours into the trail, the party finds some more webbed creatures. One web cocoon was moving.
After a few rounds of discussion, the creature frees itself and attacks the first creatures it sees. Party of 2 vs Displacer Beast(displacement nullified by watching the web for it's actual location)

The driver died overnight. The party was accused of murder. Granny shows up to smooth things over while the party makes haste up the Green Trail following the Caravan tracks.

Gremmelstorps' supplies are late and She's eager to receive them. Heaven forbid if she doesn't have the right food for the dish. She wants it all, even if things are spoiled. She wants everything and hires the party on the spot.

She's going to send her newly acquired helpers to check for the supplies and return with anything left. A standard Goblin contract. It's all legal and binding, 30 % cut. Remember taxes, 10% take home. The caravans probably been hit by thieves by now. Minimum pay is 100gp.

It should be located somewhere between the city of Lachom and Camp Ain. Who knows, Camp Ain might not have sent the supply wagon at all. She's seen no sign of it. She mentions that all her wagons are fitted with a gold coloured wheel which a distinctive tread.

The party makes it to Camp Ain and gets told the regular wagon driver had taken ill. Medicine Check verifies the driver has been poisoned. Failure suggests he'll recover from food poisoning by morning.(Party failed)

Traveling east along the Tethir road brings three recently reacquainted travelers;

(Bullywug-Fighter, human- Druid, Reborn - Cleric) on a collision meet up with a runner under a messengers compulsion (priest of Ilmatar). The party trips the runner and prepares to hog tie him to break the spell. After the man comes back to his senses, he informs then about an Orc raid on the town back in the direction he came from. He's supposed to turn everyone away or at least divert them to The logging camp, "Ain in the Winterwood".

Taking the messenger seriously, the party diverts down the southern logging road. The party encounters some deer and separately, some large spiders. Travelling further down the road, the party walks by many lowland pockets of swamp. Most are filled with fallen slash, trees vegetation, some have dried fish skins.

One has a Goblin woman bursting out of the water gasping for air. Both arms raised overhead, one holding a gleaming butchers knife that could only be described as Goblin creativity at best and the other holds a muck covered root, the end fresh cut and dripping a glowing purple sap into the water.

(Interactions, dialog, Bullywug trying to snatch Grannys uvula with his tongue...I hate players)

Gremmelstorps' supplies are late and She's eager to receive them. Heaven forbid if she doesn't have the right supplies. She wants it all, even if things are spoiled or broken. She wants everything and will pay handsomely!

Also, due to an unfortunate typo, it looks like the party is starting in Camp Ain. A small lumber camp based in the Winterwood. Green Elves have made a deal with local merchants for lumber rights as long as the elves boundaries are respected

Chaos. Fundamental in nature and yet, paradoxically, the absence thereof. As time passed, Chaos begat a thought given form, and abandoned it just as quickly. Such was the birth of Order.
