Reading through the Maztica supplement as well as the Golden Legion entry in Gold and Glory, I can't find anything that would really suggest an atrocity on the part of the Amnian mercenaries. What did they do to become so reviled on mainland Faerun? Was it as simple as merely waging a war of conquest against the native tribes?

I happened to have watched Pirates of the Caribbean: Cures of the Black Pearl last night - 'transplanting' the cursed treasure into the Realms is also a way to hint at the atrocities - certainly if one replaces the pirates with mercenaries or even the church of Helm. Amnians have a great love for gold/wealth, regardless of religious conviction...

Does anyone know what Helms opinion is concerning the matter of his priests being a bit...intolerant...when it comes to the Maztican natives?

In my campaign the church of Helm in Amn now follows a Heresy

Dominicus Heresy

Bishop Dominicus, a cleric of Helm who travelled with Cordell and his Golden legion, started the Dominicus Heresy. When Bishop Dominicus left Amn he firmlya committed to Helms teachings but when the Goldern Legion landed in the Maztican nation of Payit the Maztican attacked, capturing a number of the Amnites including Bishop Dominicus daughter. The Mazticans sacrificed her to Zaltec the Maztican god of war. When Bishop Dominicus heard of his daughters gruesome death on a Maztican god’s alter he changed and began preaching his heresy to the other clerics of Helm who served in the Legion. He preached that savages like the Mazticans believed in barbaric and uncivilized gods and that it was the duty of every cleric and follower of Helm to destroy their vile culture and religion wherever it is found.

Bishop Dominicus eventually met his end in the Maztican city of Nexal he was sacrificed to Zaltec by Patriarch Hoxitl the leader of Cult of the Viperhand. This however was not the end of Dominicus Heresy for when Hoxitl drove the knife into Dominicus chest Zatal a nearby volcano erupted spewing Ash over the city and when he ash fell on a followers of the Cult of the Viperhand it transformed them into Orcs and Ogres and Trolls and they began attacking Faerunian and Mazticans alike.

Followers of the Dominicus heresy believe the volcanos eruption at the moment of Bishop Dominicus death and the transformation of Zaltecs worshipers was Helms retribution on the Mazticans for their vile practices and for sacrificing his Bishop (This is untrue it was actually Zaltec himself who caused the eruption and transformation).

Up until recently the Dominicus heresy was confined to the Amnite city of Helmsport in Maztica (The Heresy was founded there and most of the Clerics who follow it live there) however in 1370DR an army of monsters led by the Ogre Mage Sothillis descended on Amn and conquered a large section of the nation, in 1374 another threat appeared when an army of Stingers welled up into Amn from their city in the Underdark. Having been at war with Sothillis for 4 years and now having to face a new threat the council of six are desperate for more troops to replace their losses. They sent a message to Governor Cordell in New Amn ordering him to ship some of the Golden Legion back home to help defend Amn. Reluctantly Cordell has done so sending 200 soldiers from his Golden Legion including a number of Clerics of Helm who follow the Dominicus Heresy.

By the start of 1375 the Dominicus Heresy had spread to every Helmite temple and shrine in unoccupied Amn with the barbaric Mazticans being replaced by the monstrous army of Sothillis and the Stingers. Many leaders of Helms clergy outside of Amn have been greatly disturbed by the Dominicus heresy and the leaders of the Vigilant Eye of the god (Helms paladin order) have even argued that Amns branch of the church should be excommunicated lest the rest of Helms church be tainted by the Heresies atrocities. The Companions of the one true vision an order of fighter/clerics have been heavily influenced by the Dominicus heresy due to the orders involvement in the Maztican campaigns

Believers of the Dominicus Heresy have access to the Hatred, Law, Retribution, Strength and wrath domains. They use a bastard sword as their favoured weapon.. Their weapon of the deity is a +1 Flaming Bastard Sword. Cleric believers in this heresy must be Lawful Evil or Neutral evil

It looks like you are planning an all-out civil war within Helms church. Am I right?

No plans to

My campaign set in and around waterdeep, One of the Players is runnning a Favored Soul of Helm so Im planning on a Dominicus following cleric of Helm to Waterdeep to set up Temple in the city which should create a few hooks for the Favored soul.
