My question is something I have been wondering for a while now:

in various novels I've seen Realms-natives think of their living space as "the Realms", however, I think that the term Forgotten Realms is more a brand name as a term a native would think of. A native of the Star Wars universe would not think of his home as "Star Wars".

So, how does a native Realmsian call the area he lives in, including the surrounding places? Faerūn? Toril? Just "home"?

Aye.

I started looking for it myself last night. I recall the quote, but I don't think it was posted in Ed's scroll -- 'twas likely in another thread. I'll check though my archives.

I looked for it, but wasn't sure where it was so I didn't find it. However, I didn't look that hard for it. :)

Ed answered a very similar question on these boards, which was in line with the answers posted above. Now, if you ask me were to look for his reply......... I have not a clue..... but Sage or Wooly might?!?

I don't think the people of the Realms consider their entire world to be the Realms, as there are numerous instances of characters referring to places such as Maztica, Zakhara, Kara-Tur, etc as being "beyond the Realms", "outside the Realms", and so on.

To put it in relative modern terms..

GB had the British Empire (until we gave most of it back!) and this was and still is refered to as "The Empire".
So to switch back to the Forgotten Realms, although a brand name for us, The people of Faerun would know the land or even the world as the "Realms".

For an insane example fast forward DR by 1000-2000 years, pulling it up to a technological par with the real world, Faerun would have the Realms Wide Web instead of our World Wide Web.

Candlekeep would be rww.candlekeep.com

Hilarity aside, I just tke it as another way of saying the world!

at least that my take on the matter.

Delz

Realms Wide Web

Yeah, the "Forgotten" part of the name that we're familiar with as players would be unknown to the inhabitants of the setting, as far as I know. "The Realms" and "Faerun" would be the common terms near as I can tell. Other than generically saying "the land," or refering specifically to one's own particular kingdom, city-state, etc.

When folk speak of 'the land generally' -- the human and political more than the natural world -- they think of 'the Realms'. This isn't a contraction of 'Forgotten Realms' -- rather, 'Forgotten Realms' is 'the Realms' from the point of view of modern-day Earth. The slightly less common term 'Faerūn', which means 'home' (in use if not in etymology), is used interchangeably with 'the Realms'. 'Abeir-Toril' or 'Toril' is rarely used except by scholars and sages, and that global conception of the world is equally uncommon.
