I know that it first appeared in the " Return to the Tomb of Horrors" but it's been referenced to in some 3e materials lately and my curiosity was awoken so if anyone can shed any light ( And I know you can )it would be appreciated . |

Posted - 19 Sep 2010 : 04:17:12 Demiplane of Moil A city from the Prime World of Ranais that was trapped in a demiplane by Orcus (c.f. Dead Gods adventure). Inhabitants are primarily ghouls, ghasts, wights, wraiths and the undead creatures known as the Lovelost. Not all the undead are hostile. Moil was the capital of an empire that worshipped death, genocide, undeath and specifically Orcus, Demon Lord of Undeath. As a reward for their fine service, Orcus killed all the inhabitants of this world. At the centre of Moil stands The Black Temple, sepulchre to ultimate evil and mass murder. |

Posted - 02 Dec 2009 : 04:46:20 I believe this thread highlights the key bits of lore related to Moil and gives the sources.
It is a rather flavorful feat for a generic core supplement. |

Posted - 01 Dec 2009 : 21:17:03 I'm personally a big fan of the feat in CA. I've been looking for a while for any lore relevant to Moil, it's people, or more of it's culture. I haven't found anything, so I have made up most of what I've got for a character I've had for a while. If anyone has any suggestions, I'd be glad to hear them. Just give me a PM. |

An article in the current issue of Dragon (#353), Multiple Dementia: A Guide to the Demiplanes by Todd Stewart with Oliver Diaz has information on Moil.
I tried to do my best to mine from the relevant material on Moil from 'Return to the Tomb of Horrors', 'Guide to the Ethereal', 'Dead Gods' and the available pool of lore regarding Orcus's life, quasi-life, and life once again.
Not everything I wrote made it into the piece, and originally I added a bit on the end regarding just to what end Orcus intended to use the demiplane, having returned to power once more. With Kiaransalee having abandoned Thanatos and fled for her life, portions of Moil were being used as a perverse sort of deathtrap studded living-hell for captured clerics of the Revenencer and Tanar'ri that had too willingly accepted her rule during the period of Orcus's death, etc. The visages mentioned in the article were in thrall to a lilitu cleric of orcus named Alxhiira, slowly putting the imprisoned drow and others through a labyrinth populated by original horrors native to Moil, things left behind by Acererak, and additions specifically intended to make their stay ever so happy. ;) |

Posted - 10 Feb 2007 : 15:50:44 Moil-in goodness is in "Return to the Tomb of Horrors"... damn good (very deadly adventure) you can scratch an entire campaign world if the players screw up...and boy, do they have many chances to just do that |

Posted - 09 Feb 2007 : 17:59:04 -I would have made a mention as to the "puniness" of this all, but the chance was stolen from me- by a designer, no less! |

Posted - 30 Jan 2007 : 08:05:53 I think the 2e Guide to the Ethereal Plane (or some title to that effect) briefly describes "Moil: the demi-plane that waits". I'm 99% certain that it does, but its boxed up somewhere so I can't verify that. I don't know whether it contains information not found elsewhere, though. |

Posted - 26 Jan 2007 : 14:32:09 I asked about this from Richard Baker and he said that as far as he knows the only reference to it is in "The return to the tomb of horrors" And also that it was actually thought up by Bruce R. Cordell who was responsible for the sequel of "The Tomb of Horrors". So apparently I'll ( and anyone else interested) just have to track down that adventure to get more lore on it. |

Posted - 25 Jan 2007 : 03:16:12 So is there any published info on it besides whats in these 3e sources. if Gygax worked on it then there are at least notes on it in older editions. I didnt realize it was anything but name fluff for a feat in CA. |

but for this feat, it is most likely relateing to the other definition of the word, which has it's roots in middle english.
From dictionary.com moil MOYL, intransitive verb: 1. To work with painful effort; to labor; to toil; to drudge. 2. To churn or swirl about continuously.
noun: 1. Toil; hard work; drudgery. 2. Confusion; turmoil.

I found that a bit amusing myself. There are so many jokes I could make, but I just can't . . .
I'll do one... Q) How does a moil make his money? A) From tips.
I think I got the right word :) |

Posted - 11 Jan 2007 : 21:31:07 Granted Black Lore of Moil does seem a bit suspicious :) .... It was Gygax who created the bunch originally though and the whole pocket plane which to my understanding was a remnant of a dead world.... I'd just love to see more information on this thing. I even asked Richard Baker in the hopes that he did some research on them before he created that feat. |

Posted - 11 Jan 2007 : 21:17:05 I'm guessing the writers didn't know that when they wrote Black Lore of Moil. |
