Posted - 05 Nov 2006 : 08:22:28 The 2nd Edition Book "Gold and Glory" lists around 35 mercenary companies, four of which are listed as being specifically based in the North. It's light on stats and heavy on lore, so it will still do quite fine. And before the Wooly One beats me to it: the book is available as a free PDF download at WotC's site: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/dnd/downloads .
All companies listed in the book get a short description, including composition and alignment, and major areas of operation. I have always that the four companies listed as being based in the North are just that - based in the North. Some of companies based elsewhere could well operate in the North, if they got paid enough (I'm thinking of the Flaming Fist here). Having a non-northern mercenary company operate in the North would be expensive, however - their employer would also have to pay for the cost of getting them there from their home base, and the farther they are from their home base, the more they are going to require in logistics.
Can you tell why you need to know about the mercenary companies? Because there's also a practice of getting companies together by hiring a recruiter who puts a unit together from whatever sellswords are available (for instance, in Waterdeep, Blazidon One-Eye and Filiare operate like this, and some of the Waterdhavian nobles families who have listed "mercenary fighting" as one of their fields of interest would probably work in a similar manner).

Posted - 04 Nov 2006 : 18:09:48 That's one list I don't have to hand. Do you mean the Sword Coast North, or the North in the larger sense of the lands north of the Inner Sea? |
