I am an enthusiastic gamer and not a dungeon master, which is why i have a lot of Dungeons & Dragons rpg books but havn't read nearly a handfull of them when it comes to canon material. I am looking to find as much information as i possibly can on "Stone Circles".

I've been playing around with creating a character who will take some PrC levels in "Master of the Yuirwood" and since the setting we're playing in isn't exactly in Yuirwood but geographically close by I need to find out more about these circles.

My friends pointed me to this place and i have never been here before so if there is a post already that deals with this I am sorry for this one and would like to be directed to that one. If not, then I would appreciate any help or direction i can get.

Thank you

Peter, Sweden

Embarassingly true

Yes.

See the Cloak & Dagger web enhancement.

For a detailed look at a stone circle, look at the Wyvernstones in Faiths & Pantheons.

Those are those "Lost God" hill thingies (don't have my books here) refered to in Curse of the Azure Bonds

There are also druid standing stones in the Moonsheas

That is true, but I am going to play a Sorcerer who will become a MotYW and we don't generally get spells that make us able to walk through trees :)

Honestly, just assume that any forest region on the FR map that would concievably with a category of dense somewhere within it is going to have a stone circle. In addition, you can likewise assume that wooded areas in any region where Druid is a preferred class (see the FRCS) would likewise have numerous stone circles.

When you look at the Tree Stride spell of a Ranger/Druid, or the Transport Via Plants spell of the Druid, then the abilities of the Master of the Yuirwood do not seem that spectacular. Trees are far more common than stone circles, and a typical MoTYW with access to those spell (and most will) isnt going to have to rely on the key feature of their prestige class for transportation between wooded areas.

There are quite a few scattered references to standing stones -- they're part of ancient Faerūn but we know little more than that. Shadowdale's druid grove has them; dwarves make them; gates are sometimes between them.

There are stone circles attached to the worship of Sehanine -- Demihuman Deities.

Also, the Ghost Portal, from the Perilous Gateways series at WotC:- http://www.wizards.com/dnd/article.asp?x=fr/pg20020717x

Thanks a million Mumadar. I'll go through these and see which ones are in a "wooded region of Faerūn" and thus eligable for a destination using the "Master of the Yuirwood" supernatural ability

thanks

Though not related to the Yuir circles, there are other stone circles in Faerun (although they have not seen much publication). Steven Schend came up withs everal when working on Lands of Intrigue. I believe he has posted this information elsewhere on the forum, for convenience find it below:

quote:

And a little bit more, but too much for one post....the REALLY OLD religious sites of Lands of Intrigue.

STONE CIRCLES
Stone circles for primitive and ancient worship; sometimes still used by travelers, druids, et al. There is only one complete stone circle within the areas of Amn, Tethyr, and Erlkazar, though there are fourteen ruined stone circles throughout the three countries.
May have been more----Shoon Emperors had many destroyed for their stone which became either palace walls or road stone.........

The 15 circles are:
4 in Amn: near Purskul, between Amnwater and Keczulla, between Keshla and Torbold, west of Ishla; 4 in Erlkazar: NE Impresk Lake, SE of Llorbauth, among east foothills of Kuldin Peaks, directly east of Saradush

Standing Stones Names

A) The Seventeen Sentries: Along South Fork between Purskul & Amnwater; huge ring atop hill with village at foot of hill.

A) Waukeen's Circle: roundish.....like 5 Silvers, but 7, slightly more oval, and set in high hills overlooking Imnescar

A) The Five Silvers/Five Coins: Five roundish marble slabs

A) The Giants' Dance: Along the Ridge half way between Amnwater and Keczulla, ruined: with all but two stones fallen over, three cracked asunder

T) Calimban Knoll: from Calim's Bane, or held off Calishite attack in 1st Empire.

T) The Giants' Ring: Valashar, 20 m. SE of Riatavin

T) Cairn Wheel: Noromath, within forest of tethir; still used by druids.

T) The Standing Stones of Suldell: Spellshire's standing stones....near forest line...

T) The Nanarch's Ring: Hazamarch, 10 m E of Sulduskoon's headwaters and garrison for (Knightly Order of Innocents?) ("Nine Arches Ring")

T) The Nine Ladies: Uluran; in foothills

T) The Seven Stars: Purple Hills, by Myratma; ded. to Selune, used sometimes by halflings as sacred place to Sheela Peryroyl

E) Myrjala's Circle: Ahlarkhem; five miles east of Duhlnarim, 1 m. south of road; The whole standing stones of Myrjala's Circle just southwest of Impresk Lake are still used today by the faithful of Mystra; allegedly, any priest of Mystra who dies within the circle forever attends to the circle and adds ghostly prayers. This legend is why this circle, outside of all others, remains inviolate----it is a holy place for Mystra and the ghosts keep all desecrators away, and protect any wizard who sleeps herein as if it were a druids' grove.

E) The Bluestones: Tanistan; 30 m SE of 5 Spears Hold; one fallen slab out of 14 has mysterious footprints in it---one for each race, though amidst a mass of footprints, incl. giants' and dragons' tracks. Legend: If you approach in bare feet with eyes closed and your foot fits cleanly into a footprint here, you'll have safe travel for a year.

E) Cumber's Cairn: Among foothills south of Soaring Spirit; now, with a great crystal set in a steeple of SSpt, a refracted light beam settles on the standing: of Cumber's Cairn and people say that they should be able to learn things unknown within the blessed light of Deneir. Used to be simple place marker and place safe from monsters at night.

E) Kammarthorden: Carrelath, north of Golconda; ("Kammar's Bones"---great giant slain; allegedly his bones)

I don't remember--did all of these make it through the edit stages or am I dropping old/new material in here for y'all?

thanks again man. Maybe it's like with Sildėyuir, not a lot of material to build on yet. A pity though, i kinda like the Star Elves.

Yeah, seems so. Oh. I did find a few references though. :) Page 109 under the Rel's Foot and Page 117 of Unapproachable East under the Mucklestones.

Oh,

Um, then I dunno.... there's not that much general info on any such circles outside of the Yuir..... I'd assume most major establish druid circles have some and there are probably others that have been forgotten about or left alone.....
boombrakh Posted - 09 Jul 2006 : 20:00:45
I am referring to those yes. But the PrC also refer to Stone Circles outside Yuirwood. Here, let me quote:
quote:
Work menhir circle (Su): Once per day per class level, the master of the Yuirwood can activate the menhir circles scattered throughout the Yuirwood. These circles act as keyed portals, transporting users to any other menhir circle in the Yuirwood or to the star elf realm Sildėyuir. The master of the Yuirwood can choose which menhir circle he wishes to travel to. Once activated, the portal remains open for 1 full round. During this time, any creature touching one of the menhirs is transported to destination the master of the Yuirwood chose.

At 4th level, the master of the Yuirwood can use a Yuirwood menhir circle portal to transport himself to any circle of standing stones in any wooded region in Faerūn, regardless of whether or not the destination stones are a portal terminus, although he must have knowledge of the destination he is trying to reach.

At 7th level, the character can use this ability to return to a menhir circle in the Yuirwood from a circle of standing stones in a wooded region anywhere in Faerūn, regardless of whether the origination circle is a portal terminus or not. In effect, the master can create a one-way portal that lasts 1 round from any suitable spot, as long as the destination is a menhir circle in Yuirwood.

At 10th level, the master of the Yuirwood can use a menhir circle to transport to a ring of menhirs in any wooded region in another world, although he must have knowledge of the destination he is trying to reach. He can return to the Yuirwood from a menhir circle in another world, regardless of whether the originating circle is a portal terminus or not.

Appears i read wrong and it isn't "Stone circles" but "Circle of standing stones"

Does that help?

I think you are talking about the stone menhirs in the Yuirwood?

From 2e there is the Spellbound box set and Demihuman Deities (because of the the Yuir deities have been subsumed by the elven deities). For the current material there is Unapproachable East.
