Can someone explain to me the difference between Elven High Magic, Regular Magic, and the Magic before Karsus screwed everything up?

For some reason I could never quite understand the differences between them.

Well between edition changes it becomes harder to explain.

In prior Editions Elves could never cast 9th, or even 8th level spells because of level limits (demi-humuns could not advance above a set level). Humans of course had no level limit at all.

So what evolved was Elven High Magic (sometimes just called High Magic) that allowed Elves to cast 9th and higher level spells. Some High Magic Spells were very powerful, but could only hoped to be achieved by slow advancement (had to earn twice the normal experience points to gain a level).

Regular Magic did allow Humans (and Humans only IIRC) to advance so far that they could cast 10th and higher level spells, based on reseach (and splat books) and rapid advancement posible for Humans. It could also be defined as core rules, but that did not include spells over 9th.

Magic before Karsus and after him has not changed that much (after the addition of Epic magic).

BK: Some Humans learned in effect spells and how to cast them as 10th or higher spells.
AK: With 10th levels spells not premitted though the Weave, spell reseachers develped Epic spells (that have no level) that do the effect of 10th level or higher spells.

All in all with expansion books and former 10th level spells becoming Epic spells, the High Elven Magic and 10th level ban does not really exist at all. The spell casters just learned a different way to achieve the same events.

In short the lables and/or descriptions have changed, but the same power is there to be found. Oh and of course demi-humans no longer have level caps.

Disclaimer: This is my general view of the revissions and some should be considered personal opinion/understanding.

Jigh Magic is something only surface elves do which is dangerous (or was in 2nd ed) and very very powerful, you can only become a high mage when reaching epic lvl. High magic does way more than 'normal' epic magic...

Regular magic is just that, including epic spells.

Magic before Karsus's Folly...spells that could go up to level 12 and higher (theoretically), whereas Karsus's Avatar was the only 12th level spell ever cast.

Too tired to check up more facts but I think this sums it up
