In the entry for Essembra in Volo's Guide to the Dalelands, the statue of the Mantled King is mentioned as having been enchanted by a mischevious wizard. But the promised detail is never given, as far as I can find. Have I missed it all these years, or is this something that should be asked of Ed?

That's a possibility.

A quick scan of the PDF version revealed little in the way of an actual wizard's name. And Rich Baker's Dalelands supplement doesn't provide any details on who enchanted the statue either.

I suppose you could ask Ed what he may have originally intended with this. Even if it was a DM hook, he may have initially intended it to be something else... I'd be curious to find out.

It may be that it was meant as a DM hook, so just make up something which suits your campaign best.
