Posted - 26 Nov 2005 : 18:55:14 Whatever happened to ioulaum? I heard that he was "destroyed" by alhoons, but he was a Netherese lich, I'm sure he had some backup plan, plus i don't know if they destroyed his phylactery. Just wanted to know if anybody knows anything about it. I mean, maybe Larloch or Telamont helped him out... |

There's no way a priest could be more powerful than the entity that gives him his powers. |

Posted - 28 Nov 2005 : 08:43:20 Why is it that arcane spellcasters get all the credit. Are there any figthers who could give Ioulaum a run for his money. What about divine spellcasters (clerics, druids, paladins, rangers).

What the illithids don't know is that they don't actually unite with the elder brain. The elder brain simply extracts knowledge and strength from the brain matter, the illithid's consciousness doesn't survive.
That's not always the case.
I have a theory that is supported by some 3rd party tomes which elaborate on the possible existence of semi-intact and individual illithid minds that don't fully integrate with the elder brain.
As I see it, these semi-separate minds could perhaps cause the development of a "multiple personality disorder" for the elder brain, as each of the slave minds fights for dominance over the main elder brain mental collective. The result would be an elder brain that constantly shifts between the individual illithid personalities that are involved in the battle for mental dominance with the overarching elder brain collective always trying to re-establish it's mental leadership.
Needless to say, such a situation would cause significant disruptions in the operation of an illithid colony.

Posted - 27 Nov 2005 : 04:34:31 The only deities that I would even think stats are relevant for would be demigods, becuase I have always considered them kind of "in flux" and thus able to grant spells, listen to followers, etc, but not so powerful that they have moved beyond the fear of physical limitations.

Well, as Arivia knows, the rules aren't my strongest suit, but surely there's a deity or two that could stretch him/it across their laps if they wanted to? (Mind you, why would anyone want a big, nasty brain in their lap?)
Of course, yes.
And I mentally blocked out the completely useless(how did WotC think anyone was ever going to use those?) deity stats awhile ago. |

Posted - 27 Nov 2005 : 04:15:54 Don't forget about that unique elder brain-type in the DDGttU entry for Ch'Chitl. Thalynsar was a "unique" example of such an illithid -- a hybird ulitharid, illithilich, and elder brain. Quite an intriguing curiosity among the mind flayer race...

Posted - 27 Nov 2005 : 04:12:07 An Elder Brain is a being of godlike intellect that serves as the heart of an illithid city. Ioulaum is now an Elder Brain Lich. You can find information on the Elder Brain in Underdark and Lords of Madness. |

Posted - 27 Nov 2005 : 04:11:09 Basically, the elder brain is a sentient, disembodied mind that lies at the center of most illithid communities. It resides in a pool of briny fluid and rules the community through a mingled conglomerate of illithid minds which form a united and collective consciousness. The illithid minds are "given over" to the elder brain to form the collective.
It is considered the duty of every mind flayer to one day join the elder brain by uniting their mind with the collective elder brain's mass of brain tissue.
For more details see the fantastic and richly informative 2e tome The Illithiad.

Yes, he is currently the highest CR creature in a Realms product. |

Posted - 26 Nov 2005 : 19:56:40 The apparent destruction of Ioulaum by his alhoon students was actually the conclusion of his spell to turn himself into an undead elder brain. Now he lairs in the abandoned illithid city of Ellyn'taal. For more information, see page 101 of Lost Empires of Faerun. |
