Posted - 09 Nov 2005 : 08:34:24 When I was planning some more troubles for my adventurers (which are now in Cormyr), I stumbled upon the city Hillsfar and thought that it will be nice place for them. As we're russians, we need to somehow translate the name, because neither its transliteration nor its transcription sounds really good. What is behind the name? What were the reasons for naming it so? Answers to these questions will help greatly. |

If you're looking for a literal translation, "Hillsfar" is derived from "Hillsafar" which could be interpreted as "Far Off Hills".

If you look at the list of known dwarven clan names in FR11 - Dwarves Deep, you'll note that some are concatenations of English words and some are not. I've never asked Ed the "why" behind the divergence (other than multiple authors may have introduced two different traditions and he was including known names). We could speculate that "English" variants are indeed likely-sounding interpretations in Common of dwarven words like "Hielsavar" as suggested above. Alternately, we could speculate that "English" variants are simply the Common tongue translations of the original dwarven.
Might be a good question for Ed.

I'm sure you'll find more replies. Remember also that many of the scribes here at Candlekeep live in North America, so we're just waking up over here.

Posted - 09 Nov 2005 : 10:08:20 City Hillsfar was named after dwarwen clan Hillsafar. That's all I was able to find. As for translation into Russian - I havn't found any good one, so I just use English name. Becasue "holmodal'" and "dalnye holmy" doesn't sound good to me. Especially second one, becouse it confuses it with the Far Hills in the Western Heartlands |
